Instrumentation Engineer with Maxwell Geosystems. April – July 2005. On secondment to Lands Transport Authority (LTA) on the MRT Circle Line Stage 4 and 5, Contract WSA855, Singapore. Working within a GIS framework integrating 'Insite' software into a total data management system along a major tunnel / cut and cover section of railway. Incorporating a multitude of helpful display aspects and data arrays drawn from the geotechnical instrumentation. Processed data displays instant summary alert / action / suspension levels and an array of reporting formats for the client. This meant incorporating fast, efficient and accurate data capture techniques through the instrument monitoring contractors alongside monitoring instrument installation progress for better safety / time management.

Duties:
* Analysing and interpreting the data collected and their associated anomalies.
* Updating instrument data / installation records alongside earthworks progress.
* Liaising with surveying contractors. Arranging data formats. Organizing and setting up recording schedules.
* Overseeing instrument installations and data capture. Issuing checklists to better equip surveyors.
* Working within the GIS software adjusting querying and display formats.
* Keeping information flow accurate and timely for the client. Overseeing data reporting.
* Input on instrumentation installation criteria based on geological data.

Position (key data):
* Logging & interpretation of exploratory boreholes.
* Field mapping, including slopes (both cut & natural).
* Hydrogeological investigation and analysis.
* Excellent understanding of the regional geology & geological processes affecting the engineering works.
* Working with the HKSAR government geotechnical engineers in checking & verifying the accuracy of the Ground Investigation (GI) data used in the foundation design process.
* Analysis of complex geology and associated geotechnical properties.

Contract details:
The four contracts comprised of GI data collection by means of drilling, excavating, sampling, in-situ testing, instrument installations, photographic analysis & laboratory testing to obtain accurate information used for design purposes in the development of public housing within the Hong Kong SAR. This involves liaising with all HKHA contractors including their instruction & training throughout the HKSAR. The site investigation areas covered much of the HKSAR. Responsible for verifying, managing & analysing the GI data & annotating all GI reports submitted to the HKHA by the contractors to ensure geological & geotechnical accuracy. Provide geological advice to the geotechnical engineers for sites with complex geology. Conduct meetings with the contractor's geologists to solve discrepancies. Carry out slope mapping with kinematic analysis.

2. Logging Geologist. Driltech Ground Engineering (HK) Ltd. February - March 1997. Location: HKSAR. Driltech was involved in site investigation works. Duties comprised of overseeing drilling and sampling operations, compiling soil & rock borehole logs & supervising instrument installation. Additionally, geotechnical properties of borehole samples were laboratory tested and these data were checked. Managed drill crews and sampling methods. Projects included site investigation for foundations of various residential developments around Hong Kong. Left to work for the Hong Kong government as an Engineering Geologist.

3. Geotechnical Engineer. Geotechnical Instruments (HK) Ltd. September 1994 - October 1996. Location: HKSAR. Duties involved overseeing site projects from the installation of geotechnical instruments to setting up monitoring programmes with the processing/interpreting of data. Liaised with clients and contractors and supervised site technicians. Involved in the design, installation & trouble-shooting of ground/building monitoring instruments. An in depth and comprehensive knowledge of the behaviour of the near surface lithology & its reaction to excavation and overburden was required. Instrumentation provided data for monitoring slope instability, bearing capacities, ground water behaviour & the movement/stresses upon existing building structures. Specialisation was in the use of in-place sensors. Establishing monitoring programmes for major civil construction projects. Larger projects involved building settlement/ground stability monitoring programmes required by the MTRC (Mass Transport Railway Corporation) in response to excavation carried out for the expansion of Central MTR Station (contract: MTRC-501A) and improvements to Wanchai MTR Station (contract: WAC-001).

4. TDC & Wellsite Geologist. Geoservices Int. S.A. January 1989? June 1992. Location: international. Contracted to oil companies involved in finding oil/gas reservoirs. The work entailed identifying the lithology from circulated cuttings (principally sedimentary) & constructing wellsite logs. Geological information gathered could then be correlated with offset wells to aid recognition of reservoir likelihood & potential. An understanding of gas monitoring instruments (for the detection of hydrocarbon gases & their ratios), drilling parameters & drilling fluids properties was required. This position carried an international contract, working overseas in the North Sea, on the European continent, Africa, Middle East and Australia. The most recent project involved the drilling of two exploration wells for ADCO, U.A.E.

5. Geophysical Research Assistant (July - November 1993). MSc thesis study in Greece (summer 1993 Erasmus scheme). Working as part of an oceanographic team (from the Ocean Sciences Department of Patras University) involved in the acquisition & interpretation of data collected from marine sediments (primarily using: side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profilers and gravity cores). Data was used to aid the investigation of shallow gas-related features within the sediments & determining any hazard they might present to seafloor structures.
