I am 30 years old and I am seeking full-time employment with a firm such as yours. I have been working in the surveying/civil engineering field consistently for 9 years. I live in Southern California, and I work for a Planning-Engineering-Land Surveying Company that has been affected by the slowing economy. 30% of the employees have been laid off since January, with more expected to come. I also have kept myself self-employed as a sub-consultant to land surveyors since 2004 in Southern California, as well as to Land Surveyors in the state of Arkansas. Currently, my business is only part-time work.
I am awaiting my results for the Land Surveyor In Training (L.S.I.T.) Exam which I took last fall, administered by the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors of the state of California. Results for this exam should be posted by July, 2008. I will be eligible to take my Professional Land Surveyor Exam as soon as this October provided my test results are positive.
I have contacted your company for 3 main reasons:
1. The economy in Southern California has been struggling, and may not come out of this slump for at least 2 more. Generally speaking, land development is slowing throughout the nation. I am seeking employment in a more thriving market, with more interesting and challenging projects, and an opportunity to learn, grow, and advance with a professional team of co-workers.
2. I am single- not married, no children, no property to tend. I can re-locate easily and readily.
3. From my online research, many Canadian companies are seeking technical help through employment for their engineering and design projects. I have also read some economic statistics throughout Canada, and apparently the last 2 years have been phenomenal.
My goal is to be Licensed as a Professional Surveyor (in Canada, or in California) in 2009. I am not an employee who shows up to work merely to 'put in my time' and get a paycheck. I am eager to learn, teach, and develop my skills as a Land Surveyor and work closely and assist project managers to produce a quality project under budget. Having engineering and land surveying knowledge (field as well as office management), you will find that I understand the entire process of Engineering and Project Management. I would also like the opportunity to manage projects myself, if given the opportunity. In college, I worked as an intern for a local government agency. I am ambitious and have found that the private consulting and engineering sector has been much more fulfilling to me as the challenges are greater, and the projects are typically more interesting.
Please review my attached resume, and feel free to browse my website www.surveymapping.com for additional experience and information. I am looking forward to speaking with you more upon my qualifications and what I will contribute to your firm.
