Water Efficiency and Public Information for Action project (WEPIA) - USAID

Technical Background

Mr. X is an engineer working as a Program Officer for the Water Efficiency and Public Information for Action project (WEPIA). A Project implemented by the Academy for Educational Development ( AED – Washington ) in cooperation with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI)in Jordan, funded by the United States Agency for International Development ( USAID ). Mr. X Graduated from Jordan University for Science and Technology /Civil Engineering Department, with a Major in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. Mr. X started work with WEPIA in May 2000 as a field researcher through the Queen Rania Center for Environmental Research at Jordan University for Science & Technology and as research assistant for Dr. Wael Abo Al-Shaar (Director of the Center). In July 2000 Mr. X was employed at WEPIA Project - USAID as a consultant, then assigned as a Program Officer in October 2000. Mr. X has sub-specialty in Industrial use of water and waste-water through a three- months training assignment, while still a student, at the Jordan Environmental Protection Agency in Jordan on monitoring and conserving water in the industrial sector in Jordan. He was responsible for assessing and examining use, conservation and treatment of water in more than 30 factories in Jordan. In March 2003 Mr. X was delegated from USAID project ( WEPIA ) to Ministry of Water & Irrigation ( Jordan ) to work in the newly established Water Demand Management Unit, and he's still working there till now.

At USAID project – "WEPIA" Mr. Nimri's duties included the following:

q Managing the retrofit program for large water consumers in Aqaba city and for the hotels and private schools nationally, as well as liaising with the regional authorities in Aqaba and implementing studies on water conservation and increase the water use efficiency in public and private buildings through the use of water saving devices, water reuse, and water efficiency measures.
q Serving as trainer on water issues and water auditing techniques in workshops for teachers, students, and maintenance engineers in Public and private sectors.
q Training youth in a summer camp program in water conservation and water auditing.
q Serving as an expert resource in workshops for teachers revising the school curriculum.
q Providing expert assistance in developing and reviewing WEPIA materials such as "Splash" magazine, the WEPIA website and other such materials.
q Working on arid landscaping design program to minimize the water used in Agriculture and gardens.
q Writing technical reports for the projects and preparing and managing workshops and power point presentations, related to water issues specially water conservation.
q Created and monitored a tracking system to track water consumption in Jordan's large consumers, and managed the retrofitting and auditing program for the project.
q Managing community grants work and implementations in projects related to water.
q Worked on updating the water supply codes and the city beautification codes in Jordan to make it more water efficient, in Addition to the construction codes, with the Ministry of public works and Housing.
q Worked on programs related to water reuse, gray water reuse and rainwater harvesting and storage.
q Served as a committee member in putting specifications and standards for water fixtures.
q Backstopping subcontracted programs affiliated to WEPIA such as:

-The University of Jordan Project – engaging students from the Community Service in water audits, and implementing the concept of water conservation in lectures.
-Center for the Study of Built Environment (CSBE)- Introducing the concept or arid landscaping.
-Haya Cultural Center (HCC) – A children's NGO that taught young children about water topics and concerns.
-Jordan Royal Environment and Diving Society- managed the activities of this NGO in Aqaba in public promotion of water conservation.
-Managing the "Model Community " project where WEPIA helped a small poor community to improve there water systems and use, through rainwater harvesting, gray water reuse, septic tanks, solar water heating.
