Development Director
The Scottish Coal Company Limited March 2000 – Present

Responsible to the shareholders for the following

* Securing a stream of production sites in order to maintain business plan objectives, production and profit targets. I have also secured consent for the largest opencast coal site in the UK, located within a SSSI and SPA (Working in partnership with SEPA, the Council, RSPB, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH))
* Developing and implementing an annual forward production strategy. This involves liaising closely with key 'stakeholders' (Employees, Shareholders, Politicians, Statutory Authorities, Landowners, and other Mining Companies) Delivering new assets and implementing various 'change' agendas (e.g. Transport strategies).
* Negotiating asset acquisitions and sales on behalf of the Company, securing good financial returns to the business.
* Managing a diverse team of technical professionals, internal and external, to ensure delivery of key objectives and projects. (To time and against budget).
* Developing added value property assets to complement and diversify the core business, maximising financial returns to shareholders (property, windfarms, other minerals, biodiversity, renewable energy crops, biomass supply chain). Including securing a Structure Plan allocation for a 1600 home, new settlement, east of Edinburgh.
* Proposing, presenting, seeking approval for and implementing the Company's Renewable Energy Strategy, which includes new innovative co-firing biomass proposals and energy crop production on Company landholdings. Developed the first energy crop nursery in Scotland.
* Executive Director Responsibilities, managing a £130m turn over business alongside 4 other Executive Directors.

Reporting to the Development Director

* Assisting the Development Director to formulate and implement a strategy to meet the 5-year business plan objectives, to maintain optimum production and profit margins.
* Managing the diverse development team including the exploration geologists and the associated budgets (Cross the central belt of Scotland).
* Preparing documentation and financial project statements for the Board's consideration and approval.
* Negotiating complex land access deals and planning agreements. Detailed involvement with the planning process to secure all relevant consents for mining purposes. Influencing the development of Council Structure Plan and Mineral Subject Plan policy, working alongside key stakeholders such as SEPA and SNH, RSPB and the Scottish Wildlife trust.

* Negotiating complex land and mineral access agreements, selected land disposals and maximising returns from existing assets, including none core business (property) opportunities.
* Obtaining all statutory consents to ensure delivery of the 5-year business plan, delivering a profitable production stream.
* Liaising with development team members in order to prepare robust project costings and thereafter seek Board approval to proceed with project development.
* Day to day management of the professional development team. Preparing and seeking approval for the annual forward planning, acquisition and departmental budgets (Total c. £8m).
