SUMMARY

A geophysical graduate with 8 years marine survey experience, coupled to business, project and people management skills. Currently working for an international consultancy integrating geophysical and geotechnical surveys into engineering projects worldwide.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

2006-present Coffey Geotechnics Pty Ltd
Senior Geophysicist

Providing consultancy services on a wide range of land and marine geophysical projects, including seismic reflection and refraction, sidescan sonar, resistivity, magnetics, bathymetry, down and cross-hole tomography. Projects have ranged in value from $20k to $800k, and have included applications such as material properties for directional drilling under river beds, material mapping for pipeline construction, earth resistance testing for substation siting, cavity mapping for foundation bearing capacity, and overburden definition for dredging contracts.

My role has included design and tendering of surveys, fieldwork, processing, integration of results into geotechnical works, reporting, and recommendations to the clients. Business development is also included in my work, with the business currently experiencing a large increase in both workload and enquiry level.

Project Examples

Kerteh, Malaysia Transition Zone survey
Feasibility Survey for Petronas to determine suitable pipeline landfall methodology (cut and dredge or directional drill). Sidescan, boomer, refraction bathymetry and magnetic marine surveys, coupled to SUBS and land seismic refraction.

Papua New Guinea LNG export terminal
Greenfield development for a new ExxonMobil export facility and routing of an offshore pipeline. Large piled structures, with design pile depth of up to 30m. Integration of reflection and refraction data to give indicative rock levels and strengths. Marine drilling campaign to follow. Marine

Cape Lambert 320MTPA Export Jetty
Greenfield development of new Pilbara Iron export facility, with a piled structure of up to 3km in length. Design pile depth of up to 15m, and dredge depth of 20m. Complete spread of marine geophysical survey methods, with integration of reflection, refraction, magnetic and geotechnical drilling campaigns.

Broken Bay subsurface rock level mapping
Marine reflection survey For the Department Of Defence, mapping bedrock levels in the Broken Bay area for calibration of airborne EM system. Rock depth was highly variable from zero to 200m, requiring a variety of seismic sources to be utilised.

Burnett Creek River Crossing
Marine refraction and SUBS testing to provide subsurface soil conditions at a proposed piled bridge location. Explosive sources (Powergel) and tomographic imaging allowed velocities to be correlated to geotechnical borehole results to 35m below the surface.

Bungendore Windfarm Development
SUBS testing, seismic refraction and Earth Resistivity Testing to provide rock strength and ripability values, as well as design input into earthing grid design.

Cape Lambert dredgeability survey
Continuous Underwater Seismic Refraction survey designed and conducted over Berthing Pockets and Turning Basins of an existing Rio Tinto export facility. Proposed dredge depth of 20m.

Alkimos Wastewater Outfall project
Greenfield development of wastewater outfall in WA. Marine reflection, refraction, sidescan, bathymetry and magnetometer surveys performed. Results permitted design team to select installation methodology from Horizontal Directional Drilling or Trench and Fill technologies.

Wingham River Crossing
Static Underwater Seismic Refraction survey to delineate river gravels, weathered rock, and competent rock, allowing directional drilling to install a pipeline. Intention was to drill within the weathered rock, but not to enter the gravel lenses to prevent tunnel collapse.

Brisbane wastewater tunnelling project
Large directional drilling campaign across many sites around Brisbane. Marine refraction, reflection and bathymetry surveys to provide rock levels and rock strength information, to allow drilling program within competent rock.

2003 – 2005 Osiris Projects Limited
Marine Geophysicist

Employed to work both on and offshore within the largest privately owned coastal survey company in Britain. Geophysical duties included offshore survey design, data collection, onboard QA/QC, in office processing, CAD, report writing and client presentation. Survey types included seismic reflection, swathe bathymetry, magnetometer survey and single beam bathy for swathe QA.

Project Examples

London Array Windfarm
Britain's largest offshore windfarm development situated in the lower Thames estuary. Full marine spread of swathe bathymetry, reflection, magnetometer and sidescan.

SEA6 Baseline Study
Geophysical baseline study commissioned by the government, to measure future levels of change around Britain. Reflection, swathe bathymetry, sidescan sonar, magnetometer, grab and water sampling and ROV video.

North Hoyle Windfarm
Large offshore windfarm pre and post construction surveys. Cable routing surveys. Full marine spread. Mono-piled design in sands.

Abberton Reservoir UXO Survey
Sidescan survey within the reservoir for Unexploded Ordnance, prior to commencement of expansion project.

2001–2003 NES GROUP

2002-2003 European Engineering Business Manager, NES Overseas Ltd
Responsible for re-injecting life back into the European engineering market which had been neglected over the previous 12 months.

2001-2002 Account Manager, NES Overseas USA LLC
Account manager for the largest single account that the NES Group had held at that time, for Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation. Knowledge of Project Lifecycle allowed the company to have the right people available at the right time, which in recruitment was a unique advantage. Knowledge of both the mechanical and civil workings on site, coupled to real life site experience also allowed discussion at a more technical level than other recruiters, which many clients commented on as being advantageous.

1998-2001 Navigator, Western Geophysical Ltd.
Responsible for all navigation systems on OBC seismic survey vessels. This involved the setting up of seismic lines using the Hydro navigation system; calculating and inputting various offsets; liaising with all other crew on that vessel, other vessels on the fleet, and between the marine and seismic crews; following procedures in implementing various systems; processing files and writing reports. Data Quality Control, development of team working skills, knowledge of the various roles and requirements in a 3-D seismic crew and experience of the offshore environment generally. Offshore surveys performed in Malaysia and India on a rotation basis.

Due to a global downturn in exploration budgets, and a massive reduction in workforce then sent on an intensive 6-week navigation processing course and UNIX training course. This allowed the processing of seismic and navigation data from both OBC and Streamer crews. The training was followed by projects providing solutions to long-term problems in the field via remote modifications of UNIX scripts. Some seismic data interpretation was also performed.

During my time with Western Geophysical I also completed the SEIS 1 Offshore Survival, and FRC Coxswain Certificates.

1993-1995 Mechanical Engineer, Shell Research Ltd.
Structured apprenticeship with HNC day release. Project work involving design of test rigs, construction of one-off products, database work, computer graphics work, computer-aided design, use of CNC and manual milling machines and lathes, welders, pipe-benders, hydraulic lifting equipment, basic hand tools, buying, basic accounting.
