ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERIENCE
Colorado School of Mines – Thesis Research, Aug 1999 to Jan 2002
Conducted size and chemical analysis of natural soil colloids from Rocky Flats to determine size exclusionary effects in the transport of colloidal particles through a porous media.
Compared field-flow fractionation (FFF) with other size analysis techniques (i.e. SEM, PCS, SPOS) to demonstrate difficulties of accurately sizing non-spherical particles of sub-micron size.
Coupled FFF to chemical analysis techniques (i.e. ICP-MS, GFAAS) to determine size dependent chemical distributions of the soil colloids and detect surface coatings.
Demonstrated size exclusionary effects in the transport of polystyrene beads and natural soil colloids through soil columns.
Air Quality Research – Los Alamos National Lab (ESH-17), Jan to Aug 1999
The Air Quality Division monitors the levels of suspended radionuclide contaminants in the air through a system of auto-samplers around the laboratory property.
Designed an automated program in Access and Excel using Visual Basic and SQL to automate radionuclide concentration analysis of the auto-sampler database into queried time intervals, contaminants, and auto-sampler stations. The program would then graph the data in Excel.
Calculated investigation levels for laboratory release of radionuclides.
Environmental Hydrology Research – Los Alamos National Lab (EES-15), May to Dec 1998
The project was designed to determine the effects of disruption (i.e. fire, timber harvest, construction, etc.) upon a plot of land in relation to the surface runoff, vegetative masses, and the time recovery to restore to previous conditions.
Used Access and Excel to import data into a database to allow for easy viewing of desired data. Inspect data for accuracy and completeness of entire data set.
Fieldwork included vegetation and ground moisture analysis, flume calibrations, and post-event runoff and erosion data collection. Included the programming of data loggers to test ground moisture measurement probes.
Undergraduate Research Semester – Los Alamos National Lab (EES-15), Jan to May 1998
The URS program allowed undergraduate and recently graduated students to conduct research overseen by a mentor at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Created a database of surface runoff data and erosion data from 1991 to 1998 on plots that were undisturbed and ones that were disturbed. Compared vegetation, runoff, and rain events with a previously published paper analyzing the first three years of the study. Found that there were still ill effects from the disruption in 1991.
Beneficial Use Reconnaissance Project – Nez Perce Tribe – Water Res. Div., June to Aug 1997
The Nez Perce tribe contributed to a statewide project using crews of three people to survey stream conditions on the reservation.
Tested streams for their potential beneficial uses, which included, but not limited to, measuring discharge, collection of macroinvertibrates, random sample pebble counts, electro-fishing, and classifying streams according to the Rosgen classification system.
Advanced leadership experience through crew chief position.
Environmental Health Study – TerraGraphics Environmental Engineering, Inc., June 1996 to Jan 1997
TerraGraphics worked with the Panhandle Health District in Kellogg, ID to conduct an environmental health study outside the Bunker Hill Superfund site in order to determine if lead contamination outside the site was adversely affecting the population.
The project was broken into eight crews of three people sampling the houses of volunteers. Interviews were conducted, soil and drinking water samples collected, and the house paint tested for concentrations of lead.
Certified to run an XRF machine, which determines lead concentrations in dried paint.
Collected particulate samples from houses.
Gained leadership experience through crew chief position.
Creek Restoration – Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute (PCEI), fall 1995, 1996
PCEI is a company dedicated to projects to improve environmental quality in Moscow, ID.
Volunteered to help restore meanders to a section of the Clear Creek. Most of the work centered on bank stabilization with rocks, tree stumps, and plants.
Volunteered on a wetland project where wastewater from a treatment plant is diverted through the wetlands before being discharged into the creek. Helped to plant wetlands biota.
PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION
Successfully defended a Masters research thesis on the size and chemical analysis of natural soil colloids.
Taught the laboratory for the aquatic chemistry course for the fall 2001.
Attended the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) national conference (2000) in Minneapolis, MN and the Ninth International Symposium on Field Flow Fractionation (2001) in Golden, CO to present posters of the thesis research.
Gave a technical talk of research conducted while in the Undergraduate Research Semester (URS) program at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Gave a poster presentation to laboratory workers detailing the research results of the URS program.
