Research Assistant Engineer January 2004…December 2004
E-Tech Laboratory – MSU
- Currently involved in a joint team effort for optimizing the gasification and pyrolysis processes to produce alternative gaseous and liquid fuels from biomass. A downdraft gasifier and an auger reactor are being utilized in the research efforts. Chemical analysis and fractionation of bio-oil are some the primary job functions.
- Evaluated cost-effective adsorbents for the treatment of arsenic contaminated water (batch and column) to meet the new drinking water regulations.

Diagnostic Instrumentation and Analysis Laboratory (DIAL)-MSU
- Worked on a semi-batch reactor to study the thermal destruction of hazardous chemicals. Malathion was used as a chemical agent substitute by feeding it continuously to the preheated reactor containing sulfur. Very high destruction removal efficiencies of the chemical were achieved.
- Generated the aerosol particles to test the filtration efficiencies of the HEPA filter system. Measurements were performed for particle counting by using electronic low-pressure impactor and differential mobility analyzer.
- Studied the flow patterns and erosion phenomena for different bentonite and surrogate mixture concentrations and flow rates using a continuous flow loop system. Polymer was added as a flocculant to keep the bentonite-slurry mixture in suspension.
- Worked on a continuous flow gravity separator system to study and simulate the crude oil and saline water separation. High recovery efficiencies of oil were obtained for different flow rates of oil-water mixtures.

DIAL-MSU
- Performed all the batching and melting operations. Studied the batch mixing and heat-up profiles during the melt synthesis. Maximized the waste loading to 70% by using an induction melter. Produced excellent Product Consistency Test (PCT) results used to control the chemical durability of waste glasses.
- Utilized custom-built probes for gas sampling and temperature measurements at a PPG fiberglass furnace. Both flue and stack gases were analyzed for excess oxygen and greenhouse gases.
- Produced fungicidal foam glasses to study the effects of copper (II) sulfate on the growth of mold. Both open-cell and closed-cell foam glasses responded positively to the decay of mold. Copper impregnated styrofoam was also utilized during these studies for producing structural insulating panels (SIPS).
- Performed different machine lab operations to synthesize polymer materials. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMPE), carbon fiber composites, and RTV silicone rubber were utilized to study their mechanical properties as a function of applied stress.
