OBJECTIVE
Contract work, or permanent work, requiring a Senior Geologist with expertise in applied geology, research, evaluation and communication skills

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Logging diamond drill core and conducting core orientation

Planning and supervising drainhole, piezometer and diamond drilling

Geological and geotechnical mapping, from 1:240 to 1:15,840 scales, surface or
underground, for rock mechanics, blasting, to differentiate rock types & overburden units and for mineralized zones

Identifying rock and mineral types in field ¡V experience in surficial, sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic terranes

Choosing reclamation overburden materials for capping waste dumps, for impermeable liners for drainage ditches and small dams

Reconstructing stream drainage patterns (buried by dumps, etc.) using old topographic plans and aerial photos

Ability to translate mining /geological documents from Spanish to English and
English to Spanish

QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND

Many years of progressively increasing responsibility and expertise involving;
„h Formulating overburden, rock fabric and stream models explaining groundwater
and surface flows to permit successful dewatering of large open pit mines

„h Writing geotechnical and geological papers and reports

„h Observations in open pits resulting in geotechnical domain and blast hardness zone delineation; subdivision of migmatites and metasediments for government maps, and for underground mines to trace ore-bearing and unstable structures

„h Researching land tenancy boundaries for mining rights acquisition

„h Taking remedial measures to promote pit slope stability in a large mine

„h Physical skills utilized to gather structural geology data in steep terrain

ACHIEVEMENTS

CONDUCTED geological and geotechnical tours of the Lornex and Valley open pits and also to show mining activities. This was for elementary, high school and university students, and also visiting international mining professionals. Some tours conducted in Spanish .

CONCEPTUALIZED an overburden model of a significant aquifer at an open pit mine. Result: more effective dewatering permitting deeper mining. DIRECTED drainhole drilling of bedrock groundwater targets and TALKED with mine personnel to co-ordinate a surface water diversion project. Result: reduced surface water infiltration and pit wall water groundwater pressures & increased stability.

CO-AUTHORED a paper on blast hardness mapping at a large open pit mine and delivered it at the 1992 Annual CIMM Conference. Result: publication in the July/August 1992 CIM Bulletin (pp.78-84) and blasting knowledge enhanced

RESEARCHED boundaries of peasant¡¦s land in El Salvador. Examined old legal titles written in Spanish. Conducted survey and prepared plan, and consulted with peasants. Result: boundaries established accurately as a prerequisite for acquisition of mining rights.

UTILIZED physical skills to gather structural geology data in the Canadian Rockies. Hiked 4-5 miles and gained and lost 4-5000 feet in elevation/day, in steep terrain. Results: accessed the pertinent rock formations and obtained the necessary data.

VOLUNTEERED to raise money and materials for poverty stricken people in Central America and also actively promoted recycling in Kamloops

EXPERIENCE
2000 ¡V 2001: geological/geotechnical contract work, mainly with Highland Valley
Copper and Western Coal doing geotechnical mapping/core logging and report writing. Also obtained one short contract with SRK Consultants (geotechnical consultants) doing overburden core logging of fine soils for open pit stability pre-feasibility evaluation.

1986 - 1999: as Senior Mine Geologist with Highland Valley Copper, organized
and implemented programs to promote the slope stability of two large open pits

1980- 1986: progressed from Field Geologist with Lornex Mining Corporation to Field Geologist, Slope Stability

1977 ¡V 1980: progressed from Grade Control Geologist in 1977 to Senior Rock Mechanics Geologist in 1979 at Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. Ruttan Mine, Manitoba

1973-1976: with Rosario Resources Corp., progressed from Junior Exploration to Junior Mine Geologist (El Mochito Mine, Honduras) to Project Geologist (El Dorado Mine, El Salvador)

EDUCATION/ADVANCED TRAINING

B. Sc., Geology, University of British Columbia
Various short courses in Rock Mechanics, rock mass classification, blasting and slope stability modelling. Tours at operating mines regarding slope monitoring/stability techniques, mining methods, rock types etc.
