PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Evaluation the performance of Effective Microorganisms(EM) in the activated-sludge process and modelling of thickener area for a paper and pulp industry wastewater.
Description:A laboratory bench scale study evaluated the usefulness of Effective Microorganisms (EM) in an activated sludge process for treating paper and pulp industry wastewater. A bench scale reactor of 10 litres was used in a laboratory experiment and treatment effects were evaluated with and without addition of EM in the reactor. Results obtained from the comparative study showed that without EM addition the reduction of total solids, BOD, volume of sludge and suspended solids was 47.47%, 86.67%, 22.22% and 43.01% respectively. Whereas analysis of wastewater after EM addition revealed that the reduction of total solids was 60%, of BOD 96.81%, of suspended solids 77.42%, and of sludge volume 44.44%. Modelling of thickener area achieves a 64.5% reduction in the EM added wastewater.

Description: For centuries, one of the most pressing problems facing mankind has been the dilemma of how to dispose of our garbage. Our society must find new ways not only to reduce, reuse and recycle our materials, but to detoxify our soils and environment as well. The answer may lie in the adopted widespread use of Effective Microorganisms (EM) in vermicomposting. Vermicomposting is commonly adopted for the treatment of kitchen waste. A study evaluated the usefulness of Effective Microorganisms (EM) in treating kitchen waste by vermicomposting. Vermicomposting was carried out in a plastic container, which was designed as garbage bin with a leachate removal system at the base. The red earthworms of Eisenia foetida were used in the process and vermicasts were examined after 4 weeks. Concentrations of total nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium (N, P and K) in vermicasts were higher than the concentration of fresh waste. The C: N ratio of fresh waste was higher than that of vermicasts and this ratio gives better plant growth. The use of EM in vermicomposting reduced the offensive odour and speedened up the rate of degradation, which leads to a reduction in the composting period.

In addition to supplying of principal elements to the soil, they promote microbial activity in the soil and improve its structure, aeration and water holding capacity, which in turn improves the soil capabilities to respond to inputs. This produces a high quality of compost, which leads for sustainable development.

So, by recovering that heat by placing a suitable heat exchanger and exchange this heat to pre-heat the boiler feed water (32º) to about 48-52ºby preheating the feed water, fuel consumption was increased.

Responsibility: Collected the necessary data from the plant, studied details regarding wastewater discharge.

Safety In Chemical Process Industry Through Design

Description: In the last 50 years the chemical process industries have moved to large, world scale plants. Because of their size, these plants have an increased potential for major accidents. Recognizing this potential, the industry incorporated many engineered safety features into these plants to manage and control the hazards, and this effort has been successful in producing an excellent safety record. However, failures of these systems do occur on occasion, and these failures can result in major accidents. In recent years there has been an increased effort to develop inherently safer chemical processes, focusing on changing the process to eliminate the hazard, rather than on accepting the hazard and developing "add-on" design features to control it. Design approaches to inherently safer chemical process design will be discussed, including examples of inherently safer design. Some tools for measuring the inherent safety characteristics of chemical manufacturing processes will also be described.
