Work Experience

Worked on a solid waste management project for Surat Municipal Corporation on behalf of Regional Engineering College, Surat, Gujarat, India

Surat Municipal Corporation approached Regional Engineering College, Gujarat, India to find an alternative to open dumping of solid waste as they were falling short of dumping grounds. I adopted a part of that project, namely, management of waste from the vegetable markets of Surat city, as my dissertation towards a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering. The dissertation was entitled "Study on the Effect of Varying C:N Ratio on the Bio-degradation pattern of Composting of Vegetable Waste".

Statistics available with the Surat Municipal Corporation revealed that about 100 tonnes of vegetable waste is produced on a daily basis from the vegetable markets of Surat. The diversion of this quantity of organic waste from the dumping sites could substantially reduce the load on the sites. Also, this vegetable waste could be considered a representative of organic matter, which constituted about 42% of the total municipal solid waste generated daily.

Of the various solid waste management options available today, composting was chosen for the study owing to its relative simplicity and economy, as compared to the other options; the benefits of volume reduction; and the generation of a soil amendment with marketing potential. Among the various composting processes, windrow method of composting was adopted, as it is the simplest to implement and operate, and works out to be the most economical.

Optimization methods in my study involved the determination of the most suitable carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for the composting of vegetable waste as experience shows that most organic wastes contain the other nutrients in the required amounts and ratios for composting. As vegetable waste is rich in nitrogen, the C:N ratio was adjusted by adding material rich in carbon, such as sawdust. Sawdust also serves as a bulking agent that absorbs the excess moisture of the vegetable waste, and adds structure to the windrow.

Using sawdust, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of the vegetable waste to be composted was adjusted to different values in the range 20:1 to 40:1, as literature review indicated this range to be suitable for composting of all organic wastes. Spreadsheets developed at Cornell University, by Tom Richard, were used to calculate the mass of vegetable waste, sawdust and water to be mixed to get a particular carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and moisture content. A number of windrows, each with a different carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, were formed.

The bio-degradation pattern of the composting waste was observed by graphical presentation of different parameters, such as, temperature, pH, moisture content, organic content, carbon-to-nitrogen (C;N) ratio, versus time. After the vegetable waste had decomposed, the nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus content of the compost was found out by quantitative methods in the laboratory. Also, various physical and chemical properties, such as odor, size distribution, pH, C:N ratio, and organic content, were noted, and the quality of compost formed was decided based on these factors in relation to marketability standards, developed for Washington, as similar standards for India were not available.

Based on experimental findings, and literature review, a windrow composting facility to treat approximately 100 tons of vegetable waste per day was designed. Cost estimate, to give an idea of the initial investment, as well as the operation and maintenance cost of the windrow composting facility, was worked out.

This Seminar was part of the Silver Jubilee Programme of Post Graduate Centre in Environmental Engineering in Civil Engineering Department. It focused on the varied issues pertaining to the following four themes:

2. Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
3. Reuse and Recovery Techniques
4. Sustainable Environmental Management

The academic discussion was clubbed with field experience by the consultants and practicing engineers in Environmental Engineering.
