Environmental Advisor
Member of an environmental department of 3 people responsible for the environmental performance one of Australia's second largest producing gold mines. As one of 2 advisors, I was responsible for ensuring compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements, directing and supervising site rehabilitation, monitoring and reporting efforts as well as promoting an appreciation of the environmental impacts of our operation to the workforce. Specific responsibilities included:
Ensuring site compliance with License to Operate and other legislative regulations;
Developing Environmental Management Plans;
Assisting in the management of the Environmental budget;
Internal Environmental Auditing;
Developing, coordinating and managing ongoing site rehabilitation projects;
Environmental reporting (including all Works Approval and Notice of Intent applications);
Environmental monitoring and sampling;
Database management;
National Pollution Inventory (NPI) recording and reporting;
Developing targets for improved environmental performance;
Advise other site departments on environmental issues;
Liaison with internal site departments, government departments and other interested parties
Other duties/achievements:
Assisted in the development and implementation of environmental key performance indicators (KPI's);
Advised on the development of the Annual Environmental Report for parent Company, Gold Fields Ltd, South Africa;
Initiated and drafted the initial Exploration Environmental Management Plan (EEMP);
Managed audit of historic exploration disturbance on St Ives leases and supervised rehabilitation work as required;
Initiated review of water management on site leading to greater understanding of use on site and reduction in consumption per production unit;
Actively involved in site risk assessments and assisted on due diligence assessments;
Assisted in the development of an internal auditing schedule;
Site advisory role on the disposal of hazardous materials or chemicals;
Member of Mine Emergency Response Team for two mining companies – St Ives Gold Mining Company and Goldfields Mine Management. Qualified in Rope Rescue, Fire Fighting (surface and underground), Hazardous Chemicals, Occupational First Aid, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus and trained in Vehicle Extrication.
