Led the team for the following projects at various parts of India and abroad.

OVERSEAS ASSIGNMENTS

Carried out continuous monitoring Flue Gas Emission Studies for a refinery Khafji Joint Operations, at Al-Khafji, Saudi Arabia. A project of SEW Ltd., Al-Khobar. US EPA methods have been employed to carry out the Continuous monitoring.

The project involved monitoring the flue gas emissions from chimneys under various load conditions viz. full load, normal load and at different conditions of firing viz. Low firing and high firing. EPA promulgated methods were employed to measure the flue gas temperature, velocity and pollutants for various scenarios identified. Chimneys connected to various sources were identified viz. boilers, D.G sets, and process stacks under various fuels like- Furnace oil, Fuels Gas and Bunkers Oil. Continuous monitoring was carried out for a period of 3 hours using the flue gas analyzers for the Pollutants- Particulate Matter, Sulfur Dioxide, Oxides of Nitrogen and Carbon Monoxide. Flue gas composition was also estimated. The parameters viz. Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, carbon monoxide, Excess Air were estimated.

ASSIGNMENTS IN INDIA

"Industrial Pollution Prevention Project-II, Base line data generation studies for the various districts in Andhra Pradesh". A project sponsored by Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, funded by World Bank.

Reconnaissance studies were conducted for the entire study area. Protocols were developed for various identified components. Site selection was carried out for various components like- air, Noise, water and soil. Longitude and latitude of the sites were identified using GPS handsets. A network was planned environmental monitoring. Based on its importance selection and prioritizing of the pollutants is carried out. Environmental monitoring was carried out as per the developed protocols. Statistical Analysis was carried out for the data generated through the field studies and reports were prepared.

Development of Oxides of Nitrogen for Coal Based Thermal Power Plants in India, Sponsored by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), New Delhi

The project started with the listing of various coal based power plants in India. Power stations were selected based on the age and the technology in coordination with CPCB. Literature survey was carried out on the best available control technologies (BACT) and the practices. Protocols were developed for the measurement of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), NO and NO2. Measurement of NOx was carried out confirming to EPA methods both conventional and the auto flue gas analyzers. Additional parameters like excess air, flue gas temperature were also measured. Information related to project viz. temp in the combustion zone, pollutant residence time, plant load, grade of coal used and control technologies were also collected. Measurements were carried out at various Thermal Power Stations of range 60- 500 MW. Report comprising of present scenario of power plants with respect to NOx across the country was prepared and submitted.

Regional Environmental Management Plan based on carrying capacity studies for Paradeep, Orissa a project sponsored by Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), Bhubaneshwar.

The project was initiated reconnaissance studies. Protocols for various identified components were developed. Monitoring sites were selected for various components like- air, Noise, water and soil. Longitude and latitude of the sites were identified for all the stations using GPS handsets. Monitoring network was planned for environmental monitoring. Pollutants were identified based on their importance. Environmental monitoring was carried out as per the developed protocols. Statistical Analysis of the data generated through the field studies was carried out. Various highly polluting industries were identified in the study area. Environmental management systems were audited at all the industries identified in the study area. Emission inventory for study area was prepared for various sources viz. line, area & point. Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the entire region was formulated and report was submitted.

Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Auditing

The project involved reviewing the EMS of the industry which included verification of the air, water and hazardous waste permits. Treatment facilities were inspected and performance was evaluated for air, wastewater and hazardous waste facilities. Alternative, cost effective treatment options were suggested for better compliance. A complete environmental compliance report with suggestions for improvement of EMS was submitted at:

Performance Guarantee (PG) Studies for Air Pollution Control Equipment

P.G. studies involved the measurement of the pollutant concentration levels at both inlet and outlet of the pollution control facilities. Studies involved the protocol development for the stack gas testing for particulate matter as per the EPA methods. Measurements were made for PM both at inlet and outlet of cyclones, multicyclones, dust bags and electrostatic precipitators. Iso-kinetic conditions were maintained for sampling. Other parameters like composition of the flue gas and moisture content were measured. Particle size distribution was also carried out. Necessary operating conditions were noted from the respective plants for the correlation of the generated data. A report comprising of the plant conditions and the performance of the pollution control equipment is prepared.
