Kalakhunta manganese mine area located at latitude 23° 19' N and longitude 74° 17' E is 40 kilometers from Banswara district of Rajasthan, India. The mine wastes are lying scattered and creating not only air as well as soil pollution & affect adjacent croplands by the deposition of manganese due to their typical physico-chemical characteristics. This calls for its remediation. Of the several remediation methods, phytoremediation is accepted as the primary technique for the long-term stabilization of wastes. Studies were undertaken to phytoremediate the waste by growing plants on its surface. For this purpose preconditioning of the waste was carried out. Studies were undertaken to study the effect of unamended and variously amended waste on the growth, physiology and biochemical constituents of certain test plants namely, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. and Hordeum vulgare L. to know the extent of toxicosis, the plants may face during phytoremediation. A number of wild plant species were also initially selected and tried on variously amended waste to study their tolerance and survival in the toxic and inhospitable substratum. All the plant species which were transplanted on waste were analyzed for metal contents in their above ground parts. The findings suggest the possibility of using certain selected plants for the phytoremediation of manganese mine waste. Addition of 10% Soil+3 NPK was observed to be the most suitable treatment for the purpose of revegetation of the Mn-mine waste as the plants showed highest growth under this treatment.
