Duties:
- Deployed to Tuas South Incineration Plant (TSIP) under Waste Mangement Department (WMD)
- Working in shift, was responsible for the operation of the plant. This includes boiler operation, ash conveying system and removal, flue gas treatment, water treatment, power generation system.
- Trouble shooting of faults and carrying out front-line maintenance so as not to affect the operational efficiency of the boilers and the power generators, and thus the performance of the plant
- Responding to emergency scenarios/situation, such as boiler trip, power trip etc.
- Ensuring flue gas treatment efficiency in terms of dust, HCL and dioxin discharge after incineration
- Taking charge of boiler overhaul.
- Imparting knowledge and skills to my team members
- Preparing and calling of tender for works to be done by contractors.
Achievement:
- Involve in boiler overhaul as overhaul coordinator. Scope involves ensuring safety is met before commencement of work (e.g. Erecting of scaffolding, safety valves shut, opening of man-hole), liaising with electrical and mechanical maintenance team of their schedules and work, doing hydro test of boilers and floating of safety valves etc.
- Being a “tour guide” to visitors visiting the plant, educating and imparting knowledge on the process of incineration of refuse and waste management
- Attended several courses conducted by the agency, notably:
— US EPA stack emission sampling course o Sampling and monitoring airborne contaminants
— Achieving good indoor air quality and control of Legionella Bacteria in air-conditioned building o Introduction to Environmental and Social Reporting
A charge engineer job is also to provide supervision, leadership and build a harmonious, committed and motivated team working cooperatively with management in pursuit of the organization goals. He had to mould the group, such that each individual members of the team knows exactly, not only the routine operation of the boiler and plant's equipment but also what to do in times of emergency. Hence training imparted to the technical staff on boiler operation and plant auxiliary equipment is essentially part and parcel of the charge engineer's work
