(FURTHER WRITTEN REFERENCES CAN BE SUPPLIED)

I first started learning the field with my dad who was self-employed at the time (I later took over the family name and called my business the same: Bester's Mobile Maintenance). As an apprentice my duty was to assist a qualified mechanic in the workshop and in the fields environment. My tasks were to maintain a fleet of earthmoving machines, under the instructions of my journerman. We as a team had to service the machines under our care according to a planned schedule ranging from 250 hours up to 1000 hours, as well as dealing with any breakdowns and major repairs. I worked on a service contract for about 2½ years in which daily inspections of the machines were carried out.

I then progressed to working in the workshop where I was involved in rebuilding earthmoving machines and assisted in overhauling engines, transmissions, transaxles, break systems, drive train overhauls including prop shafts, differentials, final drives and reduction hubs. This work also involved the overhaul of hydraulic components such as hydraulic pump, motors, control banks, relief valves, cylinders, solenoid or magnetic valves as well as fault finding in a hydraulic system which involved the use of hydraulic diagrams from workshop manuals. My task was to strip the components down and examine parts for wear and damage, using measuring tools such as vernier calipers, micrometers – inside and out and depth dial gauges. Then I had to order replacement parts and reassemble components. I worked in the workshop for 1½ years and also learnt to make certain tools that are necessary in some cases to complete a job. Tools such as flogging spanners to loosen tight and large nuts or bolts; pullers to remove press fitted bearing and collars on ball joints; and other splined couplings. Crow foot spanners to help in confined spaces and attachments for the purpose of testing pressures or leaks. Making these tools, using electrode rod and CO² mig welding; bench and angle grinders; drilling machines; and oxygen and acetylene burning gear.

I then passed my trade test and moved back into field service where my duties now took me all over the country servicing and repairing a wide range of contruction equipment such as graders, excavators, front-end loaders, scrapers, bulldozers and backhoe loaders. Including quarry equipment such as mobile and static screening machines, mobile and static crushers, pneumatic and hydraulic drill rigs and dump trucks. Repairing fuel starvation faults, hydraulic faults (intermediate faults) and electrical faults using workshop manuals as references. Also replacing worn parts and maintaining a high standard of customer care and relations (1½ years).

In the UK I started in the construction hire business overhauling many different makes of hydraulic hammers, (average of 5 hammers per day – for 3 months), stripping the hammers right down, replacing worn and damaged parts and reassembling them, re-gassing the accumulators and testing the breakers. I also fitted hammer circuits and quick hitch circuits.

For most of my time in England, I was part of a team that maintains a fleet of over 250 Komatsu machines and trucks. My duties involved checking over the machines on a daily basis, getting them ready for hire according to the customer's requirements and repairing any faults. I was also responsible for routine services and any occurring breakdowns. I then went on a personal-tracksafety
(P.T.S.) course, which enabled me to gain experience on a fleet of machines that were used in rail track repairs. My duties included routine services and being on standby on site for up to 48hours, incase of breakdowns, which had to be dealt with immediately, so as not to cause the customer any penalty charges. I also rebuilt a vast variety of rail implements.

In February 2002 I returned to South Africa (my visa came to an end) and rejoined Bateman
Earthmoving Equipment again, but at a smaller branch in another town. I was employed there as a mechanic / foreman / workshop manager. Bateman are agents for a number of products such as Fermec digger-loaders, Sumitomo excavators and Furakawa front-end-loaders among others. I took care of all the maintenance work and all repairs as well as product support which included warrantee jobs and modifications. My duties furthermore included inspections and quoting of customer's machines.

March 2003 brought me back to Durban, my home town, where I joined Babcock Equipment, one the leading construction companies and Volvo agents in South Africa. Here I gained valuable electronic experience and with numerous internationally recognized training courses, I am confident in my knowledge of diagnosing faults both electronically and mechanically.

I August 2005 I found myself with an opportunity to work for myself with Komatsu SA as my biggest contract. It's an ongoing contract averaging 40 – 60 hours a week and I am responsible for assembling new machines, servicing, maintenance, breakdowns and complete rebuilds of older Komatsu models. I also have a couple of smaller customers for which I maintain their machines.
