KECK & WOOD, INC., FORT MILL, SOUTH CAROLINA August, 2008 - December, 2008
POSTION: SURVEY DEPARTMENT MANAGER
DUTIES: I was hired by Keck & Wood, Inc. to reorganize the Surveying Department. To make the department a "stand alone" department and not a support service for the Engineering Department. One of the first things that I noticed was that there was a complete lack of project management going on in the Surveying Department. They were throwing people at projects instead of planning, working the hours based on estimate hours or any thought about the project budget. I performed a manpower report and realized that there was to many people for the amount of work load. I laid people off and showed the remaining personnel how to manage projects. During my 3.5 months at Keck & Wood, Inc., I produced 46 proposals for construction surveying work. Only 2 of the projects were awarded. The rest were put on hold because of the banks, in our area, freezing the money. I keep the billability of my people high but that did not allow for any billability on my part. We did some marketing research and found that, in our area, the economy would not get better for another year. The funding was not there for me to keep my position. When I took over the Department, we had 3 field crews, 2 Registered Surveyors and 2 technicians. Due to the slow down in the Economy and lack of work, my position was eliminated.
ARCADIS US, INC., PORT ST. LUCIE, FLORIDA November, 2006 - January, 2008

Setup marketing strategy within the corporate structure, work with clients on their project needs and vision, establish project timelines within client needs, setup project and personnel within my 2 offices to schedule projects, work with project managers on budgets and project management, setup regular meetings with clients and governmental agencies, work with accounting department about billing of clients. Manage ordering of supplies. Working with Human Resources department with hiring new employees, firing employees and layoff's. Evaluating employees needs and training. Set up training schedules for employees for field and office. On projects where I was Project Manager, I have daily hands-on with the projects, both from a management and design stand point but also in
AutoCAD Land Development Desktop, writing legal descriptions and with working closely with the field crews that are assigned to my projects. During my time at Arcadis US, Inc., I was able to reorganize the department, utilize the field personnel more efficiently, introduced new field code system and introduced new AutoCAD Standards to the office. The office, before I came, was just performing Land Development. I started a program of marketing to other areas of surveying, which brought in several new municipal and commercial surveying projects but due to the downturn in the housing market in Florida, I ran out of time. Arcadis decided to combine the West Palm Beach office and the Port St. Lucie office and my position was eliminated. Working with Robotic Total Stations, Data Collection, GPS systems. We have all sizes of projects from very large ($800 Million) to small ones ($1,000). When I took over the Department, I was in-charge of 2 offices with a total of 43 people including 6 Registered Surveyors, 12 field Crews, 10 Technical staff and 3 office assistants. They closed office in June, 2008
