Worked on the research problem ¡§Impacts of Urbanisation and Industrialisation on Water bodies- A Case Study on Tumkur Amanikere and Mydala Tanks, Tumkur, Karnataka¡¨

    Tumkur, one of the fastest growing towns of Karnataka is only 70 kms away from the silicon city, Bangalore. The town has attained the status of important educational, industrial and commercial center of Karnataka and has a population of 2.5 lakhs and is facing problem of environmental degradation. The town does not have sewage treatment plant and untreated sewage is directly released into Tumkur Amanikere tank which is situated in the heart of the town. Mydhala tank, drinking water source for Tumkur town, is situated outside the town about 10 km away in the rural matrix. Both the tanks were studied to know the kind of pollution load from the two different catchments characteristics one comprising of urban and rural mixed and other is purely rural. The changes that have taken place in the last three decades in both the catchments was studied using remote sensing and GIS. The changing water quality of both the tanks over two years and the ground water quality in the catchments were also studied. A detailed study of soil type, drainage pattern and human activity in both the catchments was carried out and suitable watershed management strategies were suggested to prevent the silt and nutrient load from the catchment. The study was carried out for the Ph.D degree and the thesis was submitted to Bangalore University. The degree of Ph.D in Environmental Science was awarded in the year 2002.

A brief description of the project:

    Joida taluk of Uttarakannada district of Karantaka State is one of the important source of manganese ore. The mining area is surrounded by reserved forest area belonging to Western Ghats. An impact assessment was carried out by taking into consideration two mining areas and detailed investigation on quality of water, air and soil was carried out. In addition to these, biomass estimation and socio-economic study was also carried out to study the influence of mining activity on the surrounding villages. The study was effectively done using remote sensing and GIS.

A brief description of the project:

    Kodihalli State Forest block is the area earmarked by the Department of Mines and Geology where an extensive quarrying work is going on since two to three decades for world famous pink stones mainly used for ornamental purposes. An impact assessment was carried out to know the extent of impact on surrounding vegetation, air, water, land and people.

A brief description of the project:

    The Bettahalasur area comprises of quarry and crusher units operating for building and road materials. The rock material available is gneiss and the stone is cut into slabs and also crushed into different sizes. The impacts on different components of environment due to quarrying and crushing activity were studied.

A brief description of the project:

The project was funded by World Bank and was instituted by Rural Development Engineering Division, Government of Karnataka, India. The project was a short term one and involved the collection and analysis of ground water samples from villages. Over 3950 samples from villages belonging to Bangalore North, Bangalore South and Anekal talukas were collected and analysed for potable water quality parameters. Map showing water quality was prepared.

    Worked as Guest Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science, Bangalore University, Jnana Bharathi, Bangalore from October ¡V 1999 to February 2002.
    While working as a Guest Lecturer, I have taught various subjects to post graduate students of Environmental Science. Handled practical classes for Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Auditing, Productivity and Biomass, Environmental Chemistry and Geosciences, Air and Water pollution, Waste Management and Conventional and Non-conventional Energy Resources.
