James has significant experience in data collection and analysis for estuarine, coastal and marine aquatic environments and has been involved with development of habitat classification and monitoring techniques in the UK, EU and abroad He has also been involved in applying habitat information to environmental risk management and strategic environmental assessment in the North Sea and Irish Sea and its potential for application in the management of large scale ecosystems. James has also bee involved in preparation for ICMZ schemes and offshore development proposals, and developing biotope classification and information tools for assessing environmental impact and risk assessment offshore for the oil and gas industries and for application of the Habitats Directive to offshore areas and has had input into Marine SACs, Habitat directive, and water framework directive implementation and projects.

James has been involved in number of environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in relation to oil industry and produced environmental statements to meet the requirements of the UK Offshore Petroleum Production and Pipelines (Assessment of Environmental Effects) Regulations 1999, most recently for new North Sea field developments and for deepwater exploratory wells in the UK Atlantic Margin.

James has managed and carried out a number of GIS applications in the coastal marine sector including, coastal squeeze assessments, renewable energy resource modelling and feasibility studies, habitat and development appraisals and developing new information for marine areas, such as the identification of potential offshore SACs for English Nature based on the interpretation of existing data. James has also provided GIS support, and spatial analysis on a selection of projects concerning terrestrial and marine developments, presentation of survey results, site selection, impact and risk assessment and has managed development of in-house data libraries of spatial data and licensing.

James has also participated and managed a number of marine surveys in the UK and abroad including the in the design and conduct of marine, coastal and terrestrial field surveys using a variety of techniques including remote sampling and diving survey.
Whilst researching his PhD James developed a method of providing marine information and biotope mapping for use in environmental risk assessment, research also included developing methods of integrated mapping for UK coastal zone and participation in biotope classification and mapping initiatives for EEA, ICES, OSPAR and SAMS. James is a member of ICES Marine Habitat Mapping Working Group involved in development of methods for marine classification, identification and mapping.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE
From 1996 to 1998 James joined Project Utila as Equipment Officer, Expedition Leader and Science Officer as part of a survey team on the Bay Islands in Honduras. Also involved was teaching in local schools and development of a schools and adult ecology education programme, data entry and analysis and fund-raising. The main aim of the study was a continual monitoring programme to provide information for tourist and coastal development plans. James was involved in development of survey methodology of inshore areas for evaluation for potential marine reserves. This work was devising methodology for mangal and seagrass areas, using Kayak, walking and diver surveys to provide detailed habitat mapping and seagrass density. The results included two papers presented to the Honduran government on fish, and invertebrate use of seagrass of varying densities and the associated copepod assemblages.
James had also devised the methodology for a fishery study and a marine reserve impact assessment. The project included social studies on the demands for fishing stocks management, impact assessments on dredging activities and future developments and held public meetings to provide a forum for local and tourist communication and information on conservation issues. From the results a management plan was prepared to aid the development of controlled marine reserves in the Bay Islands.
The results of these expeditions were presented to government to aid decisions on marine conservation; as a result the proposed Marine Protected Areas and terrestrial reserves advised by Coral Cay and Project Utila were implemented. The Bay islands have also been recognised as an international protected area with a managed development and tourist industry

In 1995 James joined Coral Cay Conservation, Belize in 1995 for three months. James was Equipment Officer and Diving Officer, in charge of running a team of up to 45 divers and four boats to carry out marine seagrass, mangal and terrestrial surveys on the reefs of Belize as part of a project to map resources for use by the Belizean government for environmental management.

In addition in 1989 and 1991: marine survey training and tourism effects on fish diversity studies in Red Sea. Looking at Isreali and Egyptian dive site fish diversity with anecdotal behavioural changes recording.
