The study has determined the availability of the brackish groundwater in the alluvial aquifers and possible contribution from the deeper aquifer zones. This involved surface and downhole geophysical surveys, rehabilitation and testing of existing wells. Production of a 3-d flow model in contact with the Jordan River to assess sustainable abstraction options that has been dependent upon water use and suitability for desalination.

Aral Sea Programme: Leading a team of environmental, social development, water and ecological experts to monitor the performance of the project to rehabilitate the hydraulic structures along the transboundary surface water system, Syrdarya River to allow the regeneration of the northern part of the Aral Sea. The project's overall objectives are: (i) sustaining and increasing agriculture (including livestock) and fish production in the Syrdarya River Catchment a part of the Aral Sea bBsin in Kazakhstan; and (ii) securing the existence of the Northern Aral Sea (NAS) and improving the ecological/environmental conditions in the delta and around NAS leading to improved human and animal health and conservation of biodiversity. This includes:

* review of construction tender documents for conformity to project Environmental mitigation measures and supervision of the monitoring component of the construction works valued at $US 100 Million.

This information to be used to assist the Jordan Government in standardisation of drilling documents for the Disi Conveyance Project and to assist in the determination of the utilization of local and international drilling contractors.

Assessment of the brackish water resources from surface and groundwater sources in AZ Basin in Northern Jordan.
Other tasks involved a review and evaluation of the data management and migration of data between the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) and collaborative organisations including the WAJ Laboratory using dedicated software such as Oracle database and laboratory information system (LIMS) This includes review and validation of chemical parameters used in different monitoring regimes. Analysis and evaluation of the hydrochemical data to assist in the development of national strategy for water resources in Jordan.

Provide specialist consultancy services to the Jordan Phosphate Mine Co, a semi-government organisation. This involves a preliminary investigation of the deep aquifers underlying their mine complex in Eshidiya with the drilling exploratory holes to depths of 2000m. Scope of work includes review borehole design, drilling tender documents and construction supervision of the programme of drilling, well completion and test pumping. This was followed by interpretation and analysis of the suite of data from the drilling, geophysical logging and testing programmes to define the resources that may be developed from the deep Rum aquifer within proximity of the Eshidiya Mine. Provided technical assistance in procurement of drilling equipment and materials.

Nov 98 – June 01 Zambia: Deputy Project Manager /Principal Hydrogeologist,, Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick

Deputy Project Manager of PROSPECT (Programme of Support for
Poverty Elimination & Community Transformation) Project in Lusaka, Zambia, on behalf of CARE (UK) International. This 3 year (1998-2001) commission entailed the Appraisal, Design & Construction (ADC) consultancy for the provision of community (ground)water supplies to a peri-urban population of 600,000 in 14 township compounds. Under DFID funding, the overall purpose of PROSPECT is to eliminate poverty in less-planned settlements of Livingstone and Lusaka and promote, develop, manage and maintain dignified levels of essential urban services (water, sanitation, solid waste management), through representative Area Based Organisations (ABOs). Through a negotiations-based, community and personal empowerment approach, the delivery of such services will be complemented by a range of savings and loans schemes, stakeholder and household income generating activities. The ADC includes exploratory geophysics, siting, drilling and test pumping for 25 no. production boreholes, production of digitised maps using air photos and survey of ground control points with state of the art GPS, EIA of the Lusaka Dolomite aquifers, design & supervision of water supply distribution network, sanitation and waste management, with implementation by contractor- and community-based labour.

Oct-Nov 99 Kyrgyz Republic: Hydrochemist/IT Specialist, Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick

For the Ministry of Environment Protection:
Procurement and installation of a PC-Based Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) using propriety software (Nautilus 99 and Oracle version 8) networked to computers from four separate government laboratories within Bishkek to provide a dedicated system for management of data. Organisation and supervision of the LIMS training programme using a dedicated Nautilus trainer.

Review of laboratory procedures such as methodology and QA of the various labs involved with LIMS i.e. MOEP lab, SanEpid Lab, Hydromet lab and the Geology & Mineral Resources lab to incorporate an effective LIMS to address the needs of the project.

Project Manager for the Wadi Araba Exploration Groundwater Resource Study of the deep aquifers in the Jordan Rift Valley for the Ministry of Water and Irrigation funded by the Islamic Bank and Arab Fund for Social and Economic Development. Responsible for every aspect of the project from the inception of the full programme of work and managing the field drilling and testing programme to maximum borehole depths in the region of upto 1560m. This required close supervision of all aspects of deep drilling technology for water wells to obtain the maximum hydrogeological information from each borehole. Value of works: ~ £1.3 million

Responsible for the management and the daily operation of the project office as well as the field programme. This included construction site supervision over a 3 year period and on the job training of counterpart WAJ staff.
Supervised short term input of specialist staff from the UK to advise WAJ counterpart staff in various disciplines; geophysics, advanced drilling methodologies, high pressure compressors/boosters, and mathematical flow modelling.

Involved with the procurement and transport (shipping) of drilling equipment, muds, additives, specialised self-contained geologging and pumping test units and automated water level and water quality datalogging equipment.

Detailed wellfield design including the construction of the boreholes, their development, testing, completion, and design of a network of access roads to them for a staged Development Scheme of upto 150 MCM/yr.

Preparation of international drilling tender documents using FIDIC conditions of contract.

Continuation of Phase IV three dimensional flow model development of the Qa Disi/Rum Aquifer System.

Responsible for the development of a complex 3-D computer flow model of the regional fossil water resources in the Disi/Rum aquifer system in Jordan and Saudi Arabia with an areal extent of 45,600 sq. km. This involved evaluation of previous reports, computer aided design, optimisation and implementation of aquifer parameters for preparation as input into the MODFLOW program. Collaboration modelling experts from BGS to calibrate the model under steady state and transient conditions.

Assessment of the hydrogeology in the Kintyre Peninsula for a groundwater resource study at RAF Machrihanish. This included formulation of a drilling contract and tender documents for 2 exploratory boreholes.

Responsible for the evaluation and selection of hardware and software in the Water Resources Department. Hardware: laptop & desktop PC's, printers, modems, and other peripherals Software: spreadsheets, word-processing, databases, contouring and computer aided design packages, pumping test analysis, 2-D/3-D flow and solute transport models.
