EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
2000 – 2003:
Applied Environmental Geosciences Masters course at the University of Tuebingen, Germany (M.Sc. degree July 2003).
The first from the Middle east and Africa to achieve such degree (reference letter Prof. Dr. Olaf Kolditz)
General grade: good
Harbour Engineering Project: excellent
General grade: good (C), Thesis: very good (B)
Thesis title: "Environmental Impact of Development in Coastal Areas: Desalination".
1994:
B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Ain Shams University, Cairo
Major: Irrigation and Hydraulics.
General grade: good
Harbour Engineering Project: distinction
SPECIAL EXPERTISE:
Hydrogeology, Groundwater flow and transport modelling, Geophysics, Project coordination, Natural resource assessment, groundwater contamination, Natural attenuation, Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA of resource exploitation, Environmental economics, Environmental Legislation, Climatology, Airborne contaminant fluxes, geostatistics, Hydraulics, Soil science, Lab techniques, Geochemistry, Project planning, Infrastructure.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Since 2005
With Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners), Resources & Environment Dept. Environmental Specialist/Groundwater Modeler
Participated in defining the necessary testing and reporting requirements for verifying the viability of groundwater sources to be used to supply the UCA campuses in Khorog/Tajikistan, Naryn/Kyrgyzstan and Tekeli/Kazakhstan.
- Criteria build up to be used for building the reliable water resources (groundwater) for sustainable development and community development leading to the objective of building and conducting a group of tasks that cover all needed data and conditions that include site reconnaissance for full data aquistion, climate, geology, stratigraphy, hydrogelogy, groundwater quality, grounedwater recharge, well efficiency and assesment.
Participated in data collection and analysis, GIS works, hydrogeological data analysis, and groundwater modelling, for the following project:
- Hodeidah Groundwater Study, Yemen. Study for groundwater resources in Wadi Siham catchment area, including development of a baseline information, hydrogeological investigations, hydrological analysis, and study and assessment of Wadi Siham aquifer safe yield to ensure a sustainable water supply from Baydaa and Tihama III Wellfields. This comprises a water balance estimate for Wadi Siham in general and the study zone in particular, development of a numerical model utilizing GMS/FEMWATER (flow, density-driven, solute transport modelling) to estimate the sustainable yield of the alluvial aquifer, locating potential wellfields, and investigating the impact of upstream abstraction on the saline intrusion along the Red Sea.
Participated in groundwater modelling activities for the following project:
- Stabilization of Old Drainage Tunnels - Design, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Project preparation, site investigations, alternative solutions, field-testing of alternative solutions utilizing real size physical modelling, selection of preferred solution, and detailed design for the stabilization works of existing drainage tunnels. The tunnels that are totally drowned under groundwater level are 3 km long close to Wadi Ibrahim and were implemented through rock formations at a depth of 40 m. The distance between the tunnels' soffit level and rock level in some sections is between 2 to 5 m. Works also included the use of Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) and Doppler Velocity Logs (DVL) technologies for accurately investigating and locating the tunnels' alignments. FLUENT and Groundwater Modelling System (GMS) software were used to create a complicated numerical model for the simulation of the filling process of the old drainage tunnels and the evaluation of its impacts on the groundwater regime within the Holly Haram area. The results of FLUENT model were compared with the results of the real physical model for the tunnel at a scale of 1:1. Analysis of the geological and hydrogeological impacts of the project on Wadi Ibrahim in general and Zamzam Water in particular.
