Current Situation
Cranfield University (2003 – Current): M.Sc. Land Reclamation & Restoration.
This course provides the skills to assess, plan, implement and project manage the strategies required to restore damaged and degraded land. A series of interdependent modules developed a practical in depth understanding of site assessment based on land stability and contamination issues, soils, hydrology, ecology and environmental impacts, while later topics encompassed remediation strategies ranging from earthworks and structural design, contaminant removal and containment and erosion control, to the theory and practice of ecological manipulation, species selection and habitat amelioration. Running throught these components, the economic and regulatory framework to restoration remained at the forefront, with implications considered at European and National levels, while contractual issues and wider project management were given particular emphasis.

First Degree
Edinburgh University (1988 – 1994): B.Sc.(hons) Geology.
Initially a broad brush degree, the early years of this course developed a comprehensive understanding of Earth systems and processes backed up by studies in chemistry, biology and mathematics. Extensive field work in the UK and Europe, alongside a varied laboratory program helped develop the practical skills to complement this theoretical background. With the background in place, the final years of my degree took a more industry focused approach, with hydrocarbon exploration at the forefront alongside optional IT and mineral exploration programmes.
