I am currently working as Laboratory Manager with ALS Chemex South Africa (Pty) Ltd which is the Minerals Division of ALS, a global company, which in addition to providing services for mining and exploration companies, contracted by the AngloGold Ashanti to run the on site sample preparation laboratory in the Democratic Republic of Congo since May 2007. www.alschemex.com, www.anglogoldashanti.com
The main duties performed so far includes:-
laboratory site selection, layout design and setting it up training the sample preparation staffs on operating the equipments setting up sample preparation procedures to the lab staffs monitoring the quality control to the whole process of sample preparation drafting and writing weekly reports to the AngloGold Ashanti Board and the monthly report to the ALS Chemex South Africa General Manager attending management meeting and exploration board meeting by providing presentations on the status of the Lab and how it works keeping and monitoring the standards of ALS Chemex sample preparation procedures
Preparation of sample submission sheet and sample listing to be dispatched with and assigning analytical methods to the analysis laboratory.

The main skills obtained and developed at ALS Chemex and AngloGold Ashanti includes:-
working independently on planning, design and setting up the sample preparation laboratory
Donaldson Torit Downflo Oval (Model DFO 2-4) dust collector installation with oval cartridge-style filters at the laboratory following the Manufacturer installation and operation manual. The installation included site selection, wind speed consideration, reinforced foundation building, leg assembly, lifting the unit to location, hopper assembly, electrical wiring, power pack assembly, solid state timer and solenoid connection, compressed air supply to manifold, dust pipe connection from the lab, magnehelic differential pressure gauge setting, preliminary start-up check and starting it up. It was successfully installed without any personal injury or property damage and operated well.lab management skills and budgeting
From October 2003 to May 2007 I worked with Alex Stewart (Assayers) Government Business Corporation (ASAGBC) which is an international company that provides auditing services for the production and exports of gold and other precious metals to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. www.asausa.com, www.alexstewart.com
The main duties performed at ASAGBC includes:-
Bullion and concentrate sample receiving from the mines (Geita, Kahama, North Mara, Buhemba Tulawaka and Resolute), Cross checking and returning them back to the mines after analysis via security group courier.
Bullion samples analysis for gold and silver (sample preparation, weighing and cupellation, bullion cornet parting, annealing and weighing to six decimal places).
Result recording, spread sheet preparation, calculating, Laboratory report drafting and reporting the results to the General Manager.
Recruiting new Lab Staffs and giving technical advice on precious sample analysis techniques and safety practice to all staffs in Laboratory.
Copper concentrate sampling, moisture testing, drying, pulverizing, fluxing and weighing.
Copper concentrate, matte, slag and magnetic samples analysis for gold and silver (charging into the fusion furnace and discharging them after fusion, cupellation, parting and weighing final gold)
Mineral cargo (ZnO) inspection and sampling at AMI port
Leading the group of engineers and the chemists during the maintenance of various instruments.
The main skills obtained at ASAGBC include:-
The logistic of receiving and sending samples via Security Group, weighing bullion samples up to six decimal places faster using microbalance and mechanical balance
Results calculation in percentages and part per million (ppm), spread sheet preparation and report writing.
Operating various instruments like pulveriser, crusher, sieving shaker, and rod mills during sample preparation
Charging and discharging pots (with samples) in fusion furnace and cupels (with samples) in muffle furnace at high temperature up to 1000oC
Techniques of separating gold and silver in bullion samples using dilute and concentrated acids on the hotplates with parting platinum basket and water bath
Working under pressure to meet the deadlines at high temperature environment, applying safety practice all the time, supervising the chemists while also securing the bullion samples.
Sampling and inspection techniques of mineral cargo at ports
Laboratory setting up, balance calibrations, furnace maintenance and re-building and flux preparation.
The main positions/titles at ASAGBC includes:-

Senior Mineral Inspector and Sampling Supervisor (July 2004 – Oct. 2004)

Industrial Practical Training
From June 2002 up to September 2002, I had a training of two months at Kilombero Sugar Company Limited in Morogoro as Trainee Engineer as part of my subject at the University of Dar es Salaam. The main duties performed includes:- Sugar cane size reduction and milling, juice clarification and filtration, juice concentration (evaporation and crystallization), sugar separation (centrifugation), sugar drying and Quality control in laboratory.
From June 2001 up to September 2001, I had a training of two months at SGS Geochemical Laboratory in Mwanza as Trainee Technician as part of my subject at the University of Dar es Salaam. The main duties performed includes:- Sorting and drying of samples imported from clients (Geita Gold Mines, Kahama, Resolute, East Africa Gold Mines e.t.c), Sample preparation (crushing, grinding), Fire assaying, Parting the Prills, Digesting the Prills, Aqua Regia (low gold samples) method, obtaining results using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and preparation of result report back to clients.
From June 2000 up to September 2000, I had a training of two months at Berger Paints (T) Limited in Dar es Salaam as Trainee Student as part of my subject at the University of Dar es Salaam. The main duties performed includes: - Raw material handling (registering and distributions), paint production, resin production and Quality Control of paints in laboratory.
Projects Undertaken
(1) Design of a Medical Waste Incineration Facility Utilizing Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) for handling medical wastes from Dar es Salaam Hospitals and Dispensaries. (For award of B.Sc. Eng. at the University of Dar es Salaam). It was the best final year project in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Dar es Salaam in 2003. The designed pilot plant is now constructed at the University of Dar es Salaam and the full plant is under construction in Zanzibar and also expected to be constructed at Muhimbili Referral hospital and other areas in Tanzania mainland.
(2) Determination of rate of heat loss by fouling (scale formation) in evaporators at Kilombero Sugar Company Ltd during PT3. This project was a successful one since it helped the company to know how many days the evaporators have to be cleaned and the factors let to the scale formation in pipes which affect the evaporations.
(3) Sample Contamination at SGS Geochemical Laboratory during PT2. This project studies areas where contamination mostly occurs during analysis of mineral samples. It also studied how and at what percentage each area contributed to the total contamination of samples and giving ways of minimizing it during the process of sample analysis
