WORK EXPERIENCES

1993 – present

I was the Vice President of Environmental Affairs for PT Freeport Indonesia, a copper and gold mining company in Papua, Indonesia. It is one of the largest mining operations in the world (2006 revenue: US $ 5 billion; workforce: 19,000 people, total material movement: 750,000 tons/day). My key responsibilities include the following:

Lead the Company in managing its environmental aspects and impacts in conformance with the ISO 14001 standard

Work with stakeholders, employees and consultants to find solutions for social and environmental issues

Formulate and facilitate consensus building among senior management on the Company's environmental policies and positions

Develop and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders of the Company such as government agencies, community leaders, universities and NGOs

1976 – 1985 and 1990 – 1993

I worked as a senior researcher for the National Atomic Energy Agency in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Most of my research goals were to develop nuclear techniques for environmental and human health applications. My key responsibilities included the following:

Direct a research division of 50 scientists and technicians

Generate research proposals to seek funding from government agencies and international organizations (IAEA, WHO, CEA-France, KFA Julich - Germany)

Assemble and coordinate teams to execute research plans

Present research results and publish them in scientific journals

1985 – 1990

I was a post doctoral fellow and graduate research assistant for Professor Lionel Carreira at the Chemistry Department of the University of Georgia, in Athens. Our work was conducted in cooperation with researchers from the US EPA. My key responsibilities included the following:

Develop a computer model to study the interaction between metals and humic substances
Develop a laser spectroscopy technique to verify the model
Present research results and publish them in peer reviewed journals

ORGANIZATIONS

Member of the Environmental Commission of Indonesia Mining Association, 2003 – present. Have served as the Chairman of the Commission since 2007.
