My career with Atkins commenced in September 2003, the following provides a précis of the roles and responsibilities undertaken. These are a continuation and enhancement of the experience gained whilst working directly for National Grid. The primary difference being the management of the client – consultant and the consultant-contractor relationships.

* PROJECT DIRECTOR – National Grid Projects – Non Alliance (March 2007)
Being accountable to the Business Unit Manager, I have overall responsibility for all aspects of a project and to ensure that the company fulfils its contractual obligations to the client and that our performance and the financial outcome of the project are as strong as possible.

Key roles of the project director are;
- Building an excellent working relationship with the client and identifying further opportunities.
- Ensuring the PM has sufficient and appropriate resources to complete the project.
- Taking appropriate actions where performance of the PM is inadequate or excellent.
- Protecting Atkins from all current and future risks.

* LEAD DESIGN ASSURANCE ENGINEER - Central Electricity Alliance (National Grid / ABB / Morgan EST / Atkins) (March 2007)
National Grid remodelled the existing traditional project commercial and contractual arrangements in favour of Alliance partnerships. This has involved splitting the National Grid assets in to 6 areas, in which all development and construction work is to be carried out by the associated Alliance partners. Atkins was successfully appointed into the Central Alliance.

My role within the Central Alliance will draw upon the skills and experience to date to actively shape the Alliance working model, looking for efficiencies and cost savings where possible whilst addressing the issues of safety and CDM.
In this role I am acting as National Grid's design governance within the Central Alliance.

* LEAD DESIGN ENGINEER & COMMISSIONING OFFICER (ADVANCED), FOR NATIONAL GRID (2003)
As Lead Design Engineer on a project, I am responsible for the co-ordination and management of the design team throughout the design process. This involves taking responsibility for the approval of contractor's designs on behalf of National Grid and providing technical assistance on high voltage substation projects in the range 132 KV to 400 KV. Reviewing tender returns, equipment specifications, protection & control schematics, method statements, protection settings & commissioning documentation. Typical client scheme project values range from £3 million - £20 million.

This work is being carried out across a wide variety of projects, these include:
- The implementation of substation integrated solutions known as NICAP, both on simple single feeder refurbishments and multi-site upgrades.
- Providing the design interface and technical support on National Grid to DNO self build schemes, considering the different policies and procedures of all parties concerned.
- Substation re-configuration solutions, optimising re-design (substation life Vs. financial cost)
- Development and rationalisation of multi-site operational tripping schemes.

Experience in Previous Employment

1998 – 2003 NATIONAL GRID, THORPE PARK, LEEDS.
My engineering career with National Grid commenced in July 1998, the following provides a précis of the roles and responsibilities undertaken.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing contractor design interface and management with reference to technical queries, conformance checks and technical data.
- Commissioning Officer and member of the Commissioning Panel.
- Preparation, calculation and management of protection and control settings, and rating schedules within project timescales.
- Primary interfaces with the project Engineer, Engineering Areas, Operations & Trading and the scheme contractor.
- Continuation of stewardship of relay settings and protection schedules, now on a national level.
- Actively contributing via technical forums, to reviewing company technical specifications, procedures and the automation of several processes.

* 2002 – 2003 PROJECT DESIGN ENGINEER, INFRASTRUCTURE
Progressing from the Asset Replacement team into the Substation and Infrastructure team yields an increase in design responsibility and team management. Infrastructure schemes typically involve complete substation rebuild, operational tripping schemes and temporary circuit diversions to facilitate river crossings. Typical project budget £3 million - £10 million.

* 2001 –2002 DESIGN DELIVERY ENGINEER, ASSET REPLACEMENT.
Member of the Project Delivery Team assuming full design management responsibility from contract release to scheme closure, with the requirement to actively contribute to effective team working. Projects encountered are primarily light current based. Typical project budget £500K - £2 million.

* 1999 –2001 TRAINEE ENGINEER.
Taking responsibility for schemes from sanction whilst under the guidance of a suitably qualified engineer. This has involved interfacing with other sections, chairing meetings, ensuring the design meets the specification, identifying risks, providing relay settings and producing suitable commissioning switching programs.
Responsibilities include:
- Acting as mentor to provide support and guidance to this year's placement student.
- Involvement in the early stages of 'knowledge management', included identifying suitable knowledge capture systems, evaluation of possible PC calculation aids and automating several simple process, such as the issuing of protection schedules.
- Responding to technical queries from both site personnel and Operations & Trading.

* 1998 – 1999 STUDENT PLACEMENT ENGINEER
Student placement with National Grid, light current section (Hookstone Park, Harrogate). Responsibilities included, relay settings, protection schedule and thermal ratings stewardship.

1994 – 1996 FOPET SYSTEMS, KNARESBOROUGH. Electronics Apprentice.
Between 1994 and 1996 I spent the early years of my career working as an electronics apprentice with FOPET SYSTEMS. Fopet was a small organisation that designed and manufactured electronic control systems, including laboratory fume cupboard air extractor units; supermarket checkout cash rats and automatic urinal flushing controls. Whilst at Fopet systems I undertook an ONC in Electronic & Electrical Engineering on a day release basis at Harrogate College of Arts and Technology.
