POLYPROPYLENE & MTBE PLANTS: IBN ZAHR, Saudi European Petrochemical Company is a member of prestigious "SABIC" group of companies. The complex consists of Two Polypropylene production units with an annual production of 600,000 MT and Two MTBE production units with an annual production of 1.3 million tons.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES:
Present position: Instrument / Process Control Engineer in the Technical Services department.
Responsibility: Control systems/Instrumentation project engineering, plant engineering activities, start-up / shutdown / routine plant support, Investigation on the plant upsets, Implementation of plant changes in the control systems and field instrumentation.
Advanced Process Control (APC) Project for Poly Propylene Plants: Cost 2.0 Million US $: Detailed technical scope was prepared in house, invited bids, extensive technical discussions were done with the prospective vendors, technical evaluation done, awarded the project and the project implementation is in progress.
DCS replacement project: Cost 8.0 Million US $: Evaluated the project requirement, extensive technical discussions were done with the vendor, formulated the project requirements to be an LSTK, awarded the project and handed over to a dedicated team for handling the project and the project was successfully completed.
PP-2 expansion project support: Cost 400 Million US $: Provided technical support to the EPC vendor, from the engineering department as an end user, witnessed the factory acceptance test, and commissioned the plant by performing all the functional checks in the control systems.
Miscellaneous Capital projects: Instrumentation/Control systems support was provided for various miscellaneous capital projects like Installation of the Rotary feeders on PP Product receivers/Purge Bins, Additional Bin blasters, Installation of Hard chart recorders/Bypass work station, DMDS Injection to the Catofin units, Catofin Turbine Re-rating project, 450 Debottlenecking project, Olefins conversion technology project, PP-3 expansion project.
General Activities:
To develop conceptual studies and write statement of requirements for the new projects.
To review bidder's lists, bid documents for contract/purchase for all control systems and instrumentation equipment such as distributed control systems, advanced process control, emergency shutdown systems, safeguarding systems and SCADA systems.
To review and approve engineering design activities performed by consultants and EPC contractors for all instrumentation and process control systems.
To ensure uniformity and standardization at optimum levels in design and engineering.
To audit installations during construction, witness factory and site acceptance tests, pre-commissioning and commissioning of equipment/systems.
To diagnose, carry out root cause failure analysis and advise on remedial measures to avoid the plant breakdowns. To maintain and update a centralized control systems failure report and recommend solutions for the repeated failures of the systems.
II ). OIL & NATURAL GAS CORPORATION Ltd. ( ONGC ), SURAT, INDIA. ( 1987-96)
Complex details:
The Complex HGPC (Hazira Gas Processing complex) is an on-shore plant, which receives 40 MMSCMD of Gas from the India's largest Gas fields located in the Arabian Ocean. Gas and the associated condensate are received from the Offshore platforms through the high pressure Sub Sea pipe lines. The processed Gas is supplied through 1800 KM long pipeline to various consumer companies. The produced LPG, Natural Gasoline (NGL) and Sulphur Pellets are supplied to consumers through Pipe, Rail loading facilities. The complex mainly consists of:
1. LPG Recovery Units. 4. Dew Point Depression Units
2. Gas Sweetening Units 5. Condensate Fractionation Units.
3. Gas Dehydration Units 6. Sulphur Recovery Units.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES:
Project-1: LPG Processing plant: 20 Million US $ approximately.
Commissioned the plant Instrumentation and control systems as a Maintenance engr.
Project-2: Gas sweetening plant-1: Cost of the project: 80 M US $ approximately.
An LSTK project. Coordinated with the Engineering contractor KTI, USA for the project activities, commissioned the plant Instrumentation and control systems.
Project-3: Gas sweetening plant-II: Cost of the project: 85 M US $ approximately.
As a project engineer, Coordinated with the EPC Vendor, reviewed the Detail engineering and commissioned the plant Instrumentation and control systems.
Project-4: Gas sweetening plant-III: Cost of the project: 100 M US $ approximately.
As a project engineer, Coordinated with the Engineering contractor, Daelim, Korea for the vendor evaluation, basic engineering, detail engineering, witnessing the FAT for the DCS, installation of the plant Instrumentation and control systems.
Detail Engineering & System software configuration was done for Yokogawa Centum V DCS totally in house, by generating the control loops, Sequential functions, Graphics & Logs for the Phase II Expansion project.
To plan and execute the Day to day, preventive, Break down maintenance, Annual Turn around activities for the DCS, PLC systems and various field Instruments.
Maintenance of the Control systems of Centrifugal, Reciprocating types of Compressors of various makes like NUOVO PIGNONE, ROTOFLO etc.
Calibration and servicing of various types of Control Valves, Shutdown valves and Field instruments.
Maintenance of Paging system (Gaytronics), Gas Detection Systems (Rexnord, Detronics, General Monitors), fire Alarm systems.
Maintenance of Online Analysers of various makes like Maihak, Houston Atlas, Panametrics, EG & G for monitoring of H2S, Moisture and Dew point.
Off shore experience: Frequent visits made to several Off-shore process platforms in India for various Instrumentation and control systems activities.
