My business acumen, client awareness, practical skills and engineering knowledge have developed substantially through working on a variety of; marketing, tendering, detailed plant design and commissioning projects.

The following paragraphs summarise my key experiences to date:

1) Lead Engineer/M&E Co-Ordinator: Engineer responsible for the overall project delivery from technical appraisal of specification through to hand-over including full co-ordination of design, installation, commissioning and training. Focusing and task allocation for multi-disciplined teams including; Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Process Engineers. Advancing inter-discipline documentation e.g. Instrument schedules, load lists, layouts. Development of Programme of Works (as Gantt Charts), Progress Reports, weekly liaison meetings, commissioning sequencing, training and hand-over.

2) Living and Working in a Developing Country: Self reliance (i.e. non-reliance on resources and logistics available in the 1st World), understanding of regional and national cultures (religion, politics, language), appreciation of security issues (Kasese area is/was designated a war-zone), adjusting to distancing from known social circles (family etc.), ability to learn different methods of working and working with nationals ranging from German to Australian.

3) Engineering Design: Calculating equipment sizes (e.g. Pumps, blowers, valves, etc) and vessel dimensions. Issuing control philosophies, User Requirement Specifications (URS), Functional Design Specifications (FDS) and operating procedures. Selecting and designing appropriate process units, such as; ASP, PASP, SBR, DAF, sedimentation, filtration (media and membrane), sludge thickening and chemical dosing systems. Selecting the most cost efficient materials to satisfy the Clients specification. Providing and developing P&ID’s, PFD’s, Civil Plans and Sections. Contributing to and leading HAZOP and PEAZ studies.

4) Commissioning and Training: Co-ordinating and programming/sequencing activities to produce fully functional plant within the specified time period and financial budget. Tasking disciplines to activities and driving performance. Ensuring equipment and plant operate as specified by Functional Design Specification (e.g. Pumps, control loops and process units), pressure testing pipelines and vessels, calibration of instruments and equipment (e.g. On-line analysers, emergency valves and pressure reducing/relief valves), compiling and producing commissioning dossier (Test Packs), producing as built drawings and snag lists, technical support (e.g. Surge analysis and technical evaluation reports) and operator training, managing sub-contractors through method statements & tool box talks, and supplying permits to work, supervising vendors and approval of their method statements, responsible for general Health & Safety issues (e.g. Hard hats etc.) and heading-up groups working in confined spaces.

5) Trouble-Shooting: 1) Office Based: Acting for a Consultancy on behalf of Contractors and End Users to ensure that the designs and equipment supplied is fit for purpose. Comparing specifications with tender offer and report shortfalls and/or areas of non-compliance. Document solutions to areas of non-compliance and recommend alternative processes, where necessary. 2) Field Based: Working on site or in the Field to assess and rectify under-achieving control loops, machinery, process streams and safety systems.

6) Report Writing and Persuasive Documentation: Producing performance trial, pilot trial, feasibility study and technical reports for managers and Clients. A number of these documents were written to demonstrate to Clients that my companies product (plant or equipment) complied with their specification.

7) Pilot Trials: Managing, designing, building, commissioning, operating, trouble shooting and decommissioning of projects ranging from membrane suitability to full scale coagulant addition trials.

8) Performance Trials: Calculating actual plant and equipment performance figures for comparison with their specific values. Recommending future plant operating procedures and methods of optimising equipment through interpretation of analytical and site data. Projects include: Surface aeration equipment (involving calculation of KLa), Water Treatment and Sewage Treatment Works.

9) Feasibility Studies: Providing several process unit chains capable of producing the desired product quality. Recommending the most cost effective method of production by sizing and costing the unit processes of each chain. Study range covering; production of potable water from sewage works effluent, to production of industrial water from river water.

10) Costing: Estimating/calculating capital and operating costs of processes ranging from microfiltration to sedimentation. Cost figures often presented as net present values (NPV) to allow determination of pay back period and assessment of process efficiency.

11) Research: Studying the effect of flocculating and coagulating reagents on a variety of water samples. Analysing water and sewage samples for a variety of determinants.

12) Bellis’s Coefficient of Agglomerate Rise: Method of determining a DAF (dissolved air floatation) cells dimensions and the recycle ratio required to achieve the desired separation. Bellis’s coefficient has units of time-1 and is calculated by measuring solids deficit. Awaits rigorous examination.

A detailed account of my contributions to individual projects is available on request.
