Dear Sir or Madam,
     I am submitting this package consisting of a cover letter and resume as part of the application process for the position of a Geographic Information Systems Technician.
    Presently I hold a degree from McMaster University in Geography. In April of 2001 I concluded my studies at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The skills acquired at this institution have provided me with the ability to produce a high level of required and expected results needed in the analysis and presentation of geographic data using GIS software.
    In this past academic year my studies primarily focused on statistical analysis to show spatial probability using different types of software; database management to organize databases and show relationships for easier communication and retrieval; software programming for customizing and problem solving; and finally present the results through reports and graphically. Emphasis was put on learning and customizing algorithms using ESRI products such as Arc Macro Language (ArcInfo) and Avenue (ArcView) to produce specific results. Eventually the challenges required the application of all acquired computer skills. Tasks included having ESRI products communicate with external databases and other software such as Microsoft Access and Visual Basic to solve problems. Once the required data was extracted, it was then presented in the forms of charts, maps, web pages or Power Point presentations.
    My recent co-operative project supervised by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) provided me with valuable experience and appreciation for GIS. It was our task to organize and manage the database for all of Ontario concerning farms that are susceptible to disease, e.g. hoof and mouth disease. The project required locating the point of outbreak then flagging areas in danger of being infected based on wind direction. Database management for the project included organizing thousands of records by removing redundant data, and creating new tables and links for easier access and retrieval. Software development was needed to develop four Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) to create the desired output. First, locate the origin of the disease and isolate areas of concern, second, produce a graphical output in the form of a map which focuses on the area of concern, third, develop a report of individuals affected which included pertinent information and statistics, and finally calculate intensity from the origin. (a web page as well as a Power Point presentation can be forwarded showing the project). This project has provided me with the ability to apply my analytical and problem solving skills to effectively communicate and display these sensitive issues and concerns through database maintenance, software development and graphic presentations.
    My experiences working in a military naval office have also provided me with necessary skills required in a professional environment. The position held as a finance clerk has provided me with organizational skills by maintaining logs, creating spreadsheets, and updating databases using different software packages including MS Office. While working in the administrative section I have developed my skills in communication with customers, fellow employees as well as supervisors. In the office I perform a wide range of office duties and logistical support that involved working with senior management and in a main office environment that deals with up to 300 people. This section has also raised my level of professionalism due to the sensitive and confidential issues involved. Through my six years in the military I have gathered resources and experiences working with various groups and places and dealing with many people that have helped developed my personal as well as professional skills.
    The requirements and expectations that were needed for the OMAFRA project have provided me with the experiences necessary to continue with assignments of this magnitude and sensitivity. Working in an office has given me skills that are required in an environment where communication and teamwork are necessary. I believe that my skills and experiences using ESRI products and Microsoft Office software, as well as professional work experience can be beneficial to your geomatics department.
