April 2002: Completed comprehensive research in catalytic chemistry at the University of Glasgow, earning an MSc in chemistry.

July 2000: Graduated with an upper second class B.Sc. (Honours) degree in chemistry from the University Of Glasgow.

WORK EXPERIENCE

May 2002 - Present: Assistant chemist for British Energy at Torness Power Station (an advanced gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plant). Selected for two-year graduate-training program, providing plant experience in reactor cooling water analysis, reactor coolant gas analysis, fuel pond water analysis, steam / water analysis and general laboratory duties. Training developed through safety, business and technical courses such as Introduction to Nuclear Power Theory and Technology, AGR Chemical Generic and AGR Chemical Gas-Cooled. Additional chemistry experience through secondments to other British Energy plants. Awarded "Team of the Quarter" (February 2003) for improving safety procedures related to sulphuric acid discharges.

2000 – 2002: Postgraduate research project resulting in the award of MSc. Researched the selective hydrogenation of multifunctional molecules over a 1% Pd / C catalyst. Trained in various laboratory techniques, including gas chromatography, GC-MS, 1H / 2H NMR and IR spectroscopies. Gained experience in basic catalytic reactor designs, gas line plumbing, reactor operation and modification. Awarded 1st prize for oral communication of research results at ICI Catalytic Conference 2001. Research was concluded with the submission and acceptance of a thesis.

2000: Thirteen-week summer placement at Bodycote Materials Testing, Environmental Laboratory, Clydebank. Trained in various chromatographic techniques (i.e. gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography) for soil and water sample analyses. Learned a variety of separation methods in order to prepare soil and water samples for subsequent analysis.

1999: Internship in Glasgow University Chemistry Department (synthetic inorganic chemistry). Studied luminescence of functionalised terpyridine ligands complexed to ruthenium metal centres. Trained in various laboratory techniques such as chemical extractions and solvent evaporation. Used 1H NMR spectroscopy, UV and visible spectroscopy for structure determination.

1996: Laboratory Assistant at Belhaven Brewery. Maintained the high quality of the brewery's product by means of various analytical tests throughout the brewing process. Gained excellent industrial and laboratory experience.

1993: Scottish Nuclear, Torness Power Station – Work Experience Week. Insight into operation of the power station with specific interest in the water treatment plant.

INTERESTS AND HOBBIES

Golf, bowling, badminton, snooker and ten-pin bowling.
