Hanson Aggregates Southeast Inc., Greer, South Carolina (03/98 - 9/03)
Environmental Engineer (1/01 to Present)
* Responsible for developing & engineering mine design projects: recently worked on a ЎҐGreenfield siteЎ¦ project involving the development of mine plans, erosion and sediment control plans, reclamation plans, and detailed drawings for the purpose of mine permitting with DHEC (South Carolina Dept. of Health & Environmental Control). As part of the process I was charged with the design of the storm water runoff settling basins using Method TR-55 (procedures to calculate storm water runoff volume, peak rate of discharge, hydrographs, and storage volumes), which I was able to automate by creating an Excel spreadsheet thereby improving efficiency. This program is now being used by others in the company. On site fieldwork included surveying and meeting with local officials to get required permits to construct.
* Manage mine permit renewals for North and South Carolina quarries. Process involves creating / updating mine plans, erosion and sediment control plans, grading plans, reclamation plans, and detailed drawings to continue operating legally (worked on eight such projects over last two years). Also responsible for creating maps for mine permit modifications.
* Responsible for completing annual reclamations reports (including generation of maps showing affected/disturbed areas) for North and South Carolina quarries. Reports are submitted to DHEC (South Carolina Dept. of Health & Environmental Control) and to DENR (North Carolina Dept. of Environment & Natural Resources).
* Involved in on-site inspections of stripping (overburden removal) projects to ensure proper erosion & sediment control practices are employed and to coordinate with contractors.
* Liaise with plant managers on various environmental related issues and perform inspections (sediment & erosion control, water discharge locations, air emissions, quarry /pit, boneyards, maintenance shops, fuel containment areas)
* Inspect record keeping at plants to ensure compliance with regulations, such as air permit monitoring requirements, and pollution prevention reports.
* Assist Environmental Director with gathering background information (grid coordinates) necessary for Air Dispersion Modeling.
* In-house Environmental Lab Manager: responsible for creating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manual, maintenance, certification (Compliance with EPA Water Performance Evaluation Studies) and liaising with DHEC officials.
* Water sampling: responsible for monthly collection and testing of wastewater from 9 quarries. Testing involved analysis of pH (measure of hydrogen ion), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and Turbidity.
* Responsible for filing of monthly discharge monitoring reports for South Carolina operations to the state agency (DHEC).
* Responsible for filing of quarterly discharge monitoring reports for North Carolina operations to the state agency (DENR)
* Managed filing of Superfund Amendments & Reauthorization Act (SARA) Title III & Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) Reports to the state agencies (EPD, NCERC, DHEC, TEMA) for Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee operations (approx. 30 operations). Also responsible for filing reports to the Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPC) and local fire departments.
* Handled notification of regulated hazardous waste activity to South & North Carolina state agencies (DHEC, DENR).
* Assisted with wetlands mitigation / creation projects; pre-surveying of wetlands creation area for grading & reclamation purposes, placement of transect lines, monitoring of trees, analysis of data (table, graph, map creation), generating of reports to be sent in to state agencies (DHEC, DENR, Army Corps of Engineers).
* Responsible for filing NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit applications.
* Assist with compiling NSPS (New Source Performance Standards) equipment list.
* Assist with tax map / information gathering.
* Background familiarity with Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
* Background familiarity with Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasure plan (SPCC)

This design has been adopted by other individuals within the organization.
* Conducted pre-stripping & post-stripping topographic surveys using GPS (global positioning satellite) survey equipment to estimate volume of overburden removed; basis of payment to stripping contractor.
* Conducted stockpile estimates using GPS survey equipment.
* Conducted surveys of exploration drill holes, using both Total Station & GPS.
* Assisted with Mine Planning (open pit); drew up plans.
* Performed Cycle Time Studies to optimize haul truck fleet.
* Performed Mineral Reserve Calculations.
* AutoCAD work: exploration maps, fuel containment facility, site development plans, zoning, lease areas, material flow diagrams, settling basins, technical drawings (rock boxes, rock breaker tower structure).
