2. Tertiary Qualifications
Curtin University Of Technology – Australia
Current Degree: Master In Petroleum Engineering (MPetEng)
Expected completion date: Mid January 2004
1. Applied Geology and Geophysics - The unit addresses the fundamental concepts of the earth in terms of petroleum occurrence, exploration and recovery.
2. Drilling Engineering - Drilling operations in depth, types of rigs used, the design of mud programmes, the design and selection of tubulars, the selection of bits, and rock mechanics, horizontal and multilateral well technology, and the modern tools used for changing drilling directions and the recording of subsurface data while drilling.
3. Fundamentals of Reservoir Engineering - The principles of fluid flow in porous media, rock, fluid behaviour, material balance techniques, the estimation of connate water and residual hydrocarbon saturations, and initial hydrocarbon in place estimation.
4. Hydrocarbon Phase Behaviour - Equation of state, use laboratory fluid data for the estimation of hydrocarbon volumes and to model the changes caused by reservoir pressure depletion while a field is being produced.
5. Formation Evaluation - Grounding in rock and fluid properties and the use of special core analyses. The techniques for up scaling data from a micro core plug to a macro reservoir simulation model. Use of modern well logs, fluid sampling and formation pressure measurement tools, and in the interpretation the types of fluids present in the formation, their respective saturations and rock properties.
6. Advanced Reservoir Engineering - Basic well testing and analysis techniques, the behaviour of aquifers during production, material balance in hydrocarbon reservoirs and immiscible and miscible displacement of hydrocarbons. Secondary production methods and processes. Estimation of recoverable hydrocarbons, design of secondary recovery methods, evaluation and forecasting of reservoir
7. Production Technology - Technology of well completion, stimulation techniques, inflow performance assessment and production enhancement.
8. Reservoir Management - This is an advanced level course that trains the student on how to utilise all the knowledge gained from the seven core units when carrying out a full field reservoir study. The unit emphasises the need for a commercial focus when performing reservoir evaluations and making investment proposals.
9. Numerical Reservoir Simulation – Simulation techniques and their applications with commercially available software like Eclipse (Reservoir Simulation)
10. Reservoir Characterisation - 3D geological modelling using RMS software. Upscale microscopic level field rock data and well test information to a full field reservoir simulation model in the macroscopic scale.
11. Field Performance Evaluation & Simulation Project - Determining appropriate level of skin damage for various sand control completion options based on historical field data, and develop understanding of the mechanisms for damage and the most appropriate methods to model these mechanisms using appropriate industry software.
