Duke Energy Merchants 1999-2003
Vice President, 2001-2003, Houston, Texas
Led the turnaround of this Gulf of Mexico exploration investment business. The business produced 35 MMcfd, delivering $40 million in cash flow annually with a capital budget of $30 million.
* Improved exploration drilling success rate. Expanded relationship with new prospect generator and created a new joint venture. Result: Improved drilling success rate from 36% (13 successful wells/39 total) in 2000, prior to my arrival, to 67% (12 of 18) in 2001, 75% (6 of 8) in 2002, and 75% (6 of 8) in 2003.
* Led the successful divestment of this complex business. Over an 11-month period, led the effort to market the properties, negotiate the numerous agreements to facilitate the showing and sale of properties and prospects, and negotiated the final Purchase and Sale Agreement. Result: Divested the business at a premium reserve value, $2.17/mcfe of Proved Reserves.

Managing Director of Business Development, 1999-2001, Houston, Texas
Led the upstream business development activity within this energy trading organization.

* Negotiated a $5 million Volumetric Production Payment agreement with an Oklahoma-based independent oil and gas company. This was the first VPP negotiated by this division of Duke Energy. The work served as a model for several subsequent deals that followed. Result: Duke purchased $5 million worth of Oklahoma natural gas for a 5-year term, earning $800,000.

Mobil Oil E&P U.S., Inc.
1980-1998
Exploration & Production Manager, South Texas, 1997-1998, Houston, Texas
Led the successful startup of Mobil's South Texas regional E&P business. Managed an organization of 25 technical professionals and 75 field-based operations personnel. The business produced 100 MMcfd, delivering $70 million in cash flow annually with a capital budget of $50 million.
* Captured three high quality exploration opportunities. These opportunities included a large JV with Texas Crude for exploration of the Edwards limestone, a $6 million seismic investment to explore for the Yegua at Mills Bennett, and a JV with Gulf Coast Exploration in the S. Lopeno field. Result: These transactions formed the basis for the 1998 exploration program.
* Restarted exploitation operations in the region. Result: Drilled 43 wells in 1997 compared to zero in 1996, replaced 95% of annual production with new reserves at an F&D cost of $1.12/MMcfe.

Technology Leader, Onshore Gas Business Unit, 1995-1997, Houston, Texas
Part of a three-person leadership team managing five natural gas business units. The business produced 450 MMcfd, delivering $475 million in cash flow annually with a capital budget of $120 million. The organization comprised over 350 technical professionals and field-based operations personnel.
* Rationalized and defined the business strategies for the five regions (Kansas; Oklahoma; West Texas Gas; South Texas; and South Louisiana). Developed a growth strategy for South Louisiana and variations of harvest strategies for the other regions. Result: The strategy development work increased focus and subsequent performance and was a precursor to a larger regional business strategy for the U.S. affiliate.

Business Team Supervisor, Non-Core Asset Team, 1993-1995, Houston, Texas
Led an organization of 15 technical professionals and 30 field-based operations personnel. Operated a portfolio of fields in Texas and Louisiana for harvesting and eventual sale. The business produced 66 MMcfd and 3,000 bopd, delivering $50 million in cash flow annually with a capital budget of $10 million.
* Managed the technical and environmental evaluation, marketing, and closing for the sale of numerous producing properties. Result: The largest sale was Lake Creek Field in Montgomery County, TX, a Wilcox field. The field was sold to Mitchell Energy for $25 million.
* Led the implementation of improved EHS processes/management of change. Given the maturity of the fields, assessing and addressing long-standing environmental issues was critical to preparing the fields for eventual divestment. Result: Developed a comprehensive risk analysis and a plan to effectively manage the risks and invest remedial capital.

Technical Supervisor, Operated By Others Asset Team, 1992-1993, Houston, Texas
* Led a multi-discipline team of 25 technical professionals to maximize the value from Mobil's OBO assets across the United States. The team had responsibility for assets that produced 247 MMcfd and 56,000 bopd, delivering $350 million in cash flow with a capital budget of $120 million.
