6. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN MY PRESENT POSITION
6.1. I supervise research activities conducted in the Selous Game Reserve, aiming at searching better field management practices that may likely lead to increase of the number of wildlife and income from tourist hunting and photographic tourism. Currently the on going researches / activities are the following:-
6.1.1. Relative abundance, distribution and movement of elephants in the
Selous - Niassa wildlife corridor.
6.1.2. Mosquito diversity and their consequences on Malaria transmission in the Kilombero and Rufiji River Basin.
6.1.3. Trophy quality from Selous Game Reserve. Analysis of the trophy data from the Selous Hunting Database.
6.1.4. Preparation of Maps for (General Management Plan) GMPs for Maswa Ibanda, Rumanyika, Burigi, Biharamulo and Rungwa Game Reserves.
6.2. I supervise the databases that I have established for effective monitoring and evaluation of the daily activities in Selous Game Reserve. The existing databases are the following:--
6.2.1. Selous staff Database.
6.2.2. Tanzania Tourist Hunting Database
6.2.3. Photographic Tourism Database.
6.2.4. Vehicle, Fuel and Lubricants Database.
6.2.5. Arms and Ammunitions Database
6.2.6. Ecological Monitoring Plots Database.
6.2.7. Accounts Database
All information in the database is linked to the physical location in the digital map of the Selous Game Reserve (Geographical Information System). Digital map of Selous was established by S.G.J. Mafole and P. Gross in 1997.
6.3. I conduct seminars to both Wildlife Officers, Game Scouts and villagers living near Game Reserves and National Parks on how to identify animal diseases. That will reduce the spread of epidemic diseases which are common to both livestock and wildlife.
6.4. Together with other staff members of the Selous Game Reserve I conduct Seminars to villagers living around the Reserve by teaching them the importance of wildlife. A program for fund raising has been introduced to villages (Wildlife Management Areas) and by doing so we hope that the conflicting subsistence cultivators and poaching in the Reserve will end in the near future.
6.5. I am the Site Officer for "MIKE" – Monitoring Illegal Killing of Elephants which is a programme under the auspices of CITES – Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora whose objective is to provide information on the illegal killing as well as trends in the population of elephants in Africa and Asia. In this case I supervise data collection from Selous Ecosystem (Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi and Udzungwa National Parks).
6.6. I supervise Ecological Monitoring in the Selous Game Reserve. This program covered monitoring climate, vegetation, wildlife, hunting and antipoaching success. Monitoring of wildlife and antipoaching success is in the forms of "PODS" monitoring forms (Patrol Observation Data System) and ecological aspects of hunting are monitored with trophy quality sheets. All data are compiled into various computerized databases for analyses at the Selous Headquarters, Ivory Room Dar es Salaam. I have developed 64 different forms for data collection.
I have published 20 research papers and produced 74 overview maps for the protected areas (i.e. Selous, Mkomazi, Sadani, Rungwa, Lukwika Lumesule, Moyowosi, Kijereshi, Ikorongo and Grumeti Game Reserves and 36 hunting blocks outside protected areas.
6.7. I train Game Wardens and Scouts the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Standard sheets interchangeably in the Planning and Undertaking Field Patrols. The overall objective for anti-poaching is to protect the wildlife resource by stopping illegal killing of wildlife in order to ensure its sustainability utilization.
The use of the standard sheets and GPS has the following advantages:-
6.7.1. Avoids the game scouts being lost in the monotonous wooded wilderness.
6.7.2. Increases the area coverage by pre-determining the areas to be surveyed (patrol reference points).
6.7.3.Enables all the features of interest that have been observed to be stored and made available for future reference or use.
7. LIST OF MY RESEARCHES AND PUBLICATIONS IN THE PAST TEN YEARS
