For the past 20 years I have worked extensively in mineral & energy sources and mining, particularly in the fields of oil exploration, production mining, drill and blast, and the operation and maintenance of a variety of hydraulic drilling rigs.
OIL & GAS EXPLORATION
Before moving into the Australian mining industry, I was employed for 15 years from 1980 – 1990 by Geosource & Petty Ray Geophysicals, a U.S. based company involved in oil and gas exploration. This job took me to work in numerous countries including North America, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, China, Madagascar, Sudan and central Australia (Great Sandy, Gibson and Simpson Deserts; Jackson Fields and Victoria). My position was predominantly that of dog-box operator, incorporating line trouble-shooter, using the following systems:
* MDS10 240-channel conventional computer system
* MDS16 fibre optic system
* DFS5 1000-channel conventional system
* Decoder & encoder telemetric systems
I have extensive experience as a refraction observer and with up-hole data recording and am a skilled repair technician on RCU boxes. Within these positions I was responsible for all field data recording, production and overseeing crews of up to 70 personnel.
Having worked in such a wide variety of geological terrains and ground conditions I have extensive expertise in A/C drilling for sampling to depths of 530m as well as diamond drilling (conventional and wire systems) for core sampling to 400m.
As a member of the electronic engineering team I was involved with the design and development of a fibre optic computer system used in seismic oil exploration. This system enabled us to obtain geological data from deeper levels and at a much faster rate than previously used conventional systems. Used for the first time in Australia, it was extremely successful in locating oil and gas reserves from previously explored fields. We then took the system to China, S.E. Asia and Africa.
DRILL & BLAST OPERATIONS
From the mid 90's I have worked predominantly in open cut mining for gold, nickel and iron ore. As a driller I have 20 years experience operating rigs of all sizes from the Tamrock 1000 up to Reedrill SKSS15.
I have been employed as a Drill & Blast Supervisor for some several years where my responsibilities have encompassed the planning and implementing of drill and blast patterns; the organising and managing of crew rosters, rig maintenance and down time of up to14 drill rigs and 40-person crews;
RESUME OF: NORY JAIME SANCHEZ
and the compiling of daily blast results and ensuing monthly reports using a number of in-house computer blast management programmes for the engineering department. My work with blasting procedures and techniques has allowed me to obtain a special licence to manufacture blasting agents and an Unrestricted Shotfirer's Licence. This has culminated in my now having a thorough knowledge in the use of various initiation types such as safety fuse, detonating cord, electric and non-electric detonators.
For twelve months I was employed on a contract basis as my company's Project Manager and Client Liaison Representative on the world's largest low-grade nickel mine in the world. My tasks involved the training and assessing of drilling crews; commissioning of new drill rigs, namely Atlas Copco LA's and 271 Vipers; and comprehensive advice on the most cost effective methods and best use of all the site drill rigs. My duties also included the monitoring and supply of consumables and the repair and maintenance of all equipment used in the drilling operations. I had to collate and submit monthly reports to the Drill & Blast Engineer and the Contracts Manager. My overall responsibility was to ensure that all work was done on time, within budget and in a safe and proper manner.
My current position of Drill & Blast Co-ordinator at the Ok Tedi Mine in Papua New Guinea has given me the opportunity to combine my accumulated years of experience and skills into one outlet. The Ok Tedi Mine produces 650,000 tonnes of copper and 600,000 ounces of gold per year. Since I began working here, my department has achieved an average movement of 210,000 tonnes extra per shift, with an excess five million tonnes of broken ground that is available for processing weekly. I am responsible for the management of 65 personnel in a cultural environment of over 800 different dialects. Geographically, the town of Tabubil is so isolated it is only accessible by plane. This isolation necessitates operation planning of up to three months in advance to allow for logistics and supply of materials, equipment, explosives, parts etc. I design the drill patterns, oversee each and every blast and organise the correct use of equipment and TBM depending on the geology of the area. I conduct daily production meetings with exploration and mine planning departments and ensure that weekly, fortnightly and monthly targets are met. Training of drillers and blast crew forms a substantial part of my duties as do the six-monthly and yearly assessments of workers' performances in order to calculate bonuses and promotions. Part of my duties also includes that of councillor with regards to personnel domestic issues, tribal feuding, work related problems and such like.
Safety in my chosen field has always been of paramount importance to me. To this end I have qualified as a Trainer & Assessor (Certificate IV) and enjoy any opportunity to pass on my knowledge and experience, as well as highlighting the importance of 'duty of care' between employees. There have even been a couple of instances where I have had to redesign equipment and alter work areas to prevent further injury or accident to other workers.
