During my thirty three years of experience in the mining industry the responsibilities and challenges have been many.
It has required management of operations and maintenance of process facilities for coal, base and precious metals. The capacities of the operations were from 250 to 60,000 tons per day of mine run material. Other management duties have included mining operations such as underground coal, surface coal, underground hard rock and surface/open pit mines.
Of all the aspects of management the most interesting was the budgeting process. Some operating budgets were in excess of five million dollars and construction budgets in the range of ten to twenty-five million dollars.
All of the projects I have been involved with required extensive interaction with various disciplines to ensure timely and profitable completion. One of my strengths has been the ability to think outside the box and still adhere to the requirements of the process environment. I am able to maintain focus on the end result while using flexibility to achieve it.
Due to shortages of qualified personnel, I have had the responsibility of designing and implementing training programs and courses of instruction to ensure the operation would be supplied with a trained work force.
At most of the small to medium operations one of the duties given was that of safety and health officer for the company. This position generally had duties of organizing the safety program, fire prevention program, evacuation plans, regular safety inspections, compliance with all MSHA, State and local regulations.
Extensive training has been received via in house and government sponsored programs in the following areas mine safety, mine electrification, loss control, dust control, ventilation, water treatment, personnel management, maintenance management, process control, open pit design, hazard recognition, plant security, etc.
