BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is seeking to appoint an Environmental Superintendent at the Goonyella Riverside Mine, one of the nine mines and a port owned and operated by BMA. Goonyella Riverside Mine is one of the largest open cut coal operations in the world, producing more then 13 million tonnes per annum of hard coking coal. We employ over 900 people who reside in the nearby town of Moranbah, a modern, well equipped township with all facilities, located 190km west of Mackay and the Whitsunday coast.

Reporting to the Manager Health, Safety & Environment, we are seeking an innovative and dynamic individual who will take the lead role in overall management of all environmental aspects of an open cut strip mining and underground long wall mining operations. The role requires a person to use best practice techniques along with all stakeholder considerations to plan and manage environmental aspects, and will also be required to provide assistance with mine planning requirements including key infrastructure projects and maintenance of site environmental management systems and processes.

Water management is one of the key focuses for Goonyella Riverside Mine and is therefore a core component of this role.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Planning, scheduling and implementing all environmental requirements for site.
* Ensuring that the statutory requirements under relevant acts and lease conditions as well as all external and internal environmental requirements are met.
* Proactively communicating to management and the workforce advice on site environmental issues.
* Managing contractors and consultants to ensure safety, quality and time targets are achieved.
* Representing Goonyella Riverside and Broadmeadows Mines in community related activities of an environmental nature.
* Operation and maintenance of the network of environmental monitoring stations and interpreting and communicating the results.
* Managing environmental operational and capital budgets.
* Day to day supervision and mentoring of a team of 5 Environmental professionals

The successful applicant will have:

* A relevant degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
* Experience in mining or heavy industry that prepares you to manage the breadth of responsibilities described above.
* Minimum of 2 years in a senior position with atleast 5 years in a professional environmental role
* Communication and interpersonal skills to relate to operations personnel in a production oriented work environment.
* Experience engaging with regulatory authorities will be highly regarded.
* Demonstrated experience in the implementation and support of an ISO14001 based environmental management system.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
* Sound report writing and contract management skills.
* Initiative and energy to operate in a climate of continuous improvement
* A current driver’s licence.
