Operations Manager, heapleach metallurgy (FSU)

Our Client is a LSE listed publicly traded mining development company with a number of gold and copper development properties in the FSU. The company expects its first processing plants to be operational mid-way through Q1, 2009.

Most of the construction work on the mine site has been completed. The ROM pad has been constructed and is being filled with material. The crusher is commissioned. The leach pad lining has been completed and tested and the associated damworks and earthworks are on schedule for completion.

The mineral processing plants tank works were installed in late 2008 and final steel structures for the plants are completed. The installation of piping and electronics for the ADR and SART plants should be completed in Q1, 2009. The first gold pour is predicted by April, 2009.

Our Client is looking for a technical person from the FSU (Former Soviet Union) to manage and run their heap leach operation in the country. All employees born outside the host country will be classed as expatriates. It seems that ‘traditional’ expatriates may have problem obtaining permission to work in this country due to recent economic problems.

The company is looking for a local person (of FSU ethnicity) with internationally accepted technical qualifications and 5-10 years of relevant mineral processing and management experience. Candidates should have professional experience in the FSU but we believe that even Russian experience would be acceptable.

Primary skills should include:
- A degree in a technical mining discipline, preferably metallurgy;
- Experience managing a technical work force, preferably a mine, or another isolated mineral processing facility;
- Good spoken and written English, coupled with mother-tongue fluency in Russian or another FSU language;
- Broad heapleach experience with a thorough understanding of the technology, process and possible operating issues, especially in the FSU;
- Experience of working elsewhere in Russia or the FSU, perhaps in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakstan or Tajikistan.

The company is prepared to consider two candidates for the two distinct roles, should one candidate be impossible to identify. They would consider:
1) A person with good mining management skills in the FSU, and
2) A metallurgist with heap leach and other low-grade gold metallurgical experience, ideally in Russia or the FSU.
