Position Synopsis
In this 12 month fixed term appointment, the Database Administrator will work within a small team to support the Resource Evaluation Group and other geological functions for BHP Billiton’s Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) operations. You will be responsible for the maintenance and management of geoscience database including resource definition and exploration drill hole data, blast hole data and geophysical data (remote sensing).
Reporting to the Principal Database Specialist, key responsibilities will include:
* Daily data loading, manipulation and integrity checks of critical geoscience data, and problem solving as required;
* Maintaining and improving existing geoscience databases;
* Training, mentoring and ongoing support of WAIO geoscientists in the database systems and processes;
* Engaging with external service providers and contractors; and
* Supporting the long term strategy for the management of geoscience data.
Skills and Experience
You will have tertiary qualifications in Geoscience or Computer Science and have a minimum of 2 years experience in database management, preferably within the mining industry. Ideally you will have exposure to a variety of database systems and mining related software such as Vulcan, GBIS and AcQuire across the exploration and production environments.
To be considered, your technical skills will be complemented by your attention to detail and ability to multi-task. Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships across WAIO’s geological functions will be critical to your success.
