Location: Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Canada
Company: The Canadian Salt Company
Mine and Facility Manager
Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Canada

Our Environment

SALT!

It's more than just the white, granular seasoning that enhances the flavour of so many foods. Salt is one of the most widely used minerals on Earth. It's a natural preservative that inhibits the growth of bacteria, and an essential element in our diet.

We are the leader in Canada!

The Canadian Salt Company Limited is a K+S Group Company. We are headquartered in Pointe-Claire (Québec) and employ more than 900 people in our four evaporated salt plants and three rock salt mines. We have employees across Canada in our network of warehouses and salt storage facilities. Our distribution centres are strategically located to serve Canada's geographically dispersed markets, employing truck, rail and marine transportation.

Products made from evaporated salt (salt recovered from brine) are used in household and food products, as well as for agricultural, water softening and industrial purposes. Those made from mined rock salt are also sold to household and industrial markets for ice control, and to the water softening and general industrial trades.

Our Facility in Pugwash has approximately 230 employees in production and staff. We produce salt from an evaporation process for the consumer market, such as pool salt, water softening salt, table salt and food processing salt. From the mine we produce de-icing salt used on roads. Our operation runs 5 days a week and 24 hours a day, year round.

The Challenge
Reporting to the Director of Mining Operations based in our Head Office in Pointe-Claire, PQ, you will assume overall responsibility for our plant in Pugwash. You will manage the day to day operations of a combined underground salt mining operation, an associated evaporation process, and a marine terminal distribution facility, including all aspects of financial, human resources, health and safety, production and maintenance activities. This position has five superintendents as direct reports for surface, underground, maintenance, plant engineering and reliability engineering, and five indirect reports for safety, works controller, quality management, distribution and purchasing.

Responsibilities
• Ensure that the corporate production plan is adhered to by planning and organizing activities with the leadership team and the workforce
• Working with your team of superintendents, communicate goals and demands and lead the production of salt for customers in a cost-effective manner
• Plan and ensure that safety remains a top priority for the surface as well as underground employees, and ensure all employees, production and staff are informed of security measures
• Manage and oversee regulations, safety programs, equipment and policies with the Safety Coordinator and the Safety Trainer to ensure compliance with provincial and federal laws
• Identify and verify that all salt products are produced according to high standards of quality and that they meet customers’ requests
• Plan the annual budget and work closely with the Plant Controller to ensure cost targets are achieved for production and investments
• Adhere to the capital budget for all expenses allowed and ensure that approved improvements are coordinated with success within budget
• Manage labour relations with union representatives and act as a spokesperson at the negotiation table
• As a member of the senior management team, attend meetings in Head Office in Chicago when requested, and communicate information to the management crew in Pugwash, Nova Scotia

Requirements
• Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Engineering or a relevant discipline
• A professional engineering designation is preferable
• An MBA would be a strong asset
• A minimum of 15 years’ relevant experience in the mining industry
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior supervisory role
• Relevant experience in project management and budget planning
• Experience in a unionized environment would be beneficial
• Excellent knowledge of safety regulations
• Superior leadership and communication skills
• Computer literate
• Available to travel in Canada or USA as required
• Must be willing to relocate close to the plant in Canada
• Working knowledge of the food grade industry and consumer goods products would be a strong asset

We are offering an excellent compensation package
• Competitive salary
• Excellent fringe benefits
• Pension plan
• Compensation based on performance
