Summary Description of Duties: 1. To oversee activities related to the environmental engineering team a. Independently handles permitting activities including application submittal, monitoring, and reporting with Environmental Manager b. Using advanced professional knowledge, acts as an advisor to a variety of internal and / or external requests related to environmental awareness and law c. Collaborates with senior management to identify and analyze business requirements and the implications for the team; identifies gaps and implements agreed upon solutions d. Proposes new work approaches, methods, and policies to optimize performance and to ensure adherence to industry regulations and organizational standards e. Contributes to the development of policies and practices related to environmental services f. Assists Environmental Technicians in performing environmental monitoring and sampling g. Maintains excellent rapport with regulatory agencies to foster a working relationship that minimizes adversarial actions and maximizes informal exchange h. Keeps on top of trends related to environmental engineering and incorporates this information into work assignments and approach i. Monitors costs related to environmental engineering and implements approved recommendations for maximizing operational efficiencies j. Assigns tasks to less experienced employees and provides mentorship and guidance on complex or escalated issues k. Actively seeks mentorship and learning to improve product or technical knowledge and skill set l. Participates in task forces related to area of expertise m. Identifies areas requiring permit modifications as operational changes dictate n. Evaluates water quality to determine if changes are occurring and takes appropriate action o. Assists in coordinating contractor and environmental consultants p. Oversees the well system from an engineering perspective, including monitoring the systems to assure the Tailing Impoundment operates as a zero discharge facility q. Obtains agency approval for design and process modifications as needed r. Responsible for solid and hazardous waste disposal, including auditing of disposal facilities prior to the shipment of hazardous waste s. Conducts regular and frequent inspections of company operations to ensure regulatory and permit compliance t. Develops and updates site environmental plans as needed 2. To analyze information and prepare technical documents to support decision making a. Investigates, researches and analyzes information and issues related to environmental engineering b. Prepares business cases regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders c. Prepares quarterly quality data reports, semi-annual air quality reports, annual reclamation reports, and annual TRI Form Rs d. Reviews results of laboratory analysis and evaluates field crew and lab performance, as they relate to quality assurance and quality control (QA / QC) e. Prepares quarterly and annual reports for state and federal regulatory agencies as well as internal monthly reports 3. To communicate information related to environmental engineering a. Assists with training and skill development on technical issues in environmental engineering b. Assists other departments to identify additional environmental training requirements to meet compliance objectives c. Provides information on operating standards, compliance requirements and policies 4. To lead and manage a team responsible for executing the environmental engineering strategy a. Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor to direct reports; works to overcome challenges and barriers, and minimize risk b. Sets performance targets and measures, monitors, and manages overall performance of the team and direct reports c. Builds the capabilities of the team to enhance their ability to achieve financial and operating strategy; hires appropriately, leverages the talents of the team, and takes corrective action where necessary
Qualifications: Additional specialized education of up to 4 years Formal professional or technical registration in appropriate area of expertise 5 – 8 years of related work experience BA or BSc degree in engineering, natural resources management, or biological sciences, or equivalent work experience in related field Working knowledge of the provisions of environmental permits and regulations
