MINE OPERATIONS SUPERINTENDENT (OPEN CUT)

Job Title: Open Cut Mine Operations Superintendent
Reports to: Open Cut Mine Manager
Direct Reports: Shift Supervisors, Safety and Training
Indirect Reports: Mine operators
Internal Customer: Superintendent – Geology
Superintendent – Mine Engineering & Services
Superintendent – Mine Maintenance
Superintendent – Milling
Environmental, Health & Safety Personnel
External Liaison: OEM Maintenance Personnel

Principal Job Objective:
To lead the open cut load and haul operations group to safely and efficiently move ore and waste to achieve agreed
production and budget targets.

Key Accountabilities:
1. Implementing the Superintendent responsibilities as outlined in the PGM Health and Safety Manual
2. Achieving agreed mine production targets
3. Ensuring construction standards as detailed in the PGM Mine Design Specifications are achieved in the open pit
mine.
4. Managing and developing the Trainee National Shift Supervisors
5. Managing and implementing the Mining Operations Training Management System
6. Mine Operations (Open Cut) overheads, tyre and GET life.
7. Eliminating Equipment Damage
8. Complying with all safety requirements and observing all company policies and procedures.
9. Carrying out all other duties that may reasonably be required.
Person Specification:

Qualifications:
• A or B Grade Quarry Managers Ticket (or equivalent)
• First Aid Certificate
• Current Drivers License

Capability Area
Experience:
• Minimum 10 years work experience in a medium sized open cut mining operation.
• Proven leadership and team building skills at senior supervisory level

Cognitive Power
• Ability to diagnose systems and or processes, to identify significant events and then take appropriate actions

Knowledge
• Understands the open cut mining process
• Understands strategies / techniques required to achieve Mine Design Specifications.

Skills
• Strong negotiation skills
• Ability to mentor, coach, review and develop subordinates.
• Ability to relate and communicate effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Emotional Intelligence
• Demonstrated interpersonal leadership skills
• Keep inquiring and learning when challenging the ‘status quo’
• Self-motivation to keep pushing hard issues and unpopular initiatives
• Ability to recognise the importance of making difficult short-term decisions to avoid longer-term social
dysfunction

• Desire to work on technical issues related to mining and planning
• Values the work of supporting the success of the Open Cut Mine Manager
• Recognise the value of success of the PGM team as a whole

Other Criteria:
• Satisfactory results from the prescribed medical examination and psychological appraisal, which may indicate
fitness and ability, to carry out prescribed tasks to required performance and safety standards.
• Production of a satisfactory security clearance.
