Barrick Africa is currently seeking to appoint a Security Specialist to oversee the protection of assets and personnel at Bulyanhulu Gold Mine Limited (BGML) from the risk and threat of loss from crime and waste in the most cost effective and timely manner

KEY RESULT AREAS / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Interact and participate with the Mine and Process Departments, to ensure sustained development of a Safe and Healthy Work Environment on the Mine Site and within the Communities of contact.

Direct the activities of the Security Section assuring cost effective and high quality initiatives are taken. Achievement of Zero Property Loss Incidents is considered as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI).

Enforce and follow procedures as laid down to ensure prevention of material loss.

Ensure that any loss is investigated in a proactive manner, to ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken.

Ensure that all security personnel are equipped, trained and qualified to respond to potential “breach of security” incidents in an appropriate manner.

Implement the necessary programs and reporting functions that will facilitate timely, training schedules and commitment forecasts.

Develop and promote a Succession Plan that will define appropriate localization initiatives and ensure these commitments are met.

Promote and implement the appropriate Policies and Procedures that are based on the submissions and commitments to the Tanzanian governing agencies and the best management practices that are part of our Barrick Operating System and corporate philosophy.

The Environment Impact Assessment and the Environmental Management Plan are key documents that must be understood, promoted and adhered to as the project proceeds with development and operations.

Adhere to the Barrick Guidelines on the Use of force.

PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL DETAILS

Education & Experience:

10 years experience in the Military, Police, or as a Security Professional, working in a mining and gold processing environment

Experienced teaching or training role within an undeveloped environment

A working knowledge of appropriate software programs that will facilitate the reporting within the security arena. These include Word, Excel, or other database software

A post secondary education (Security Certification)

Strong and proven leadership qualities are essential

Previous experience in a similar environment to Africa

Excellent interpersonal, leadership and decision making skills to work with others to achieve planned objectives

Experience in dealing with conflict situations

Knowledge:

A good knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices is essential

Working experience in Africa or a developing country that requires systematic coaching and training of employees will be a distinct advantage

Must quickly be able to get to know and understand the local culture and be able to adapt to the coaching needs of trainees

Must have reserves of patience and be able to act on his or her own initiative when a situation calls for it

The successful candidate will however be a team player and have the ability to encourage people to work together as a cohesive team

People who have open, energetic and socially skilled personalities will do particularly well

Special attributes:

Must have a receptive personality and be able to sustain the respect of subordinates and peers

Communication will be the defining element of this role - an extrovert personality and an interest in other people will be to the successful candidate’s advantage
