The project consists of open pit and underground mines, concentrator and supporting infrastructure to produce high-grade copper and gold concentrates.
The open pit will be a large tonnage operation (100 Mtpa), including a large fleet of truck and shovel combinations, production drills, as well as ancillary and other support equipment. Pre-strip mining of the open pit is underway, with first ore scheduled to be delivered to the concentrator in 2012. The project will utilise a Mongolian workforce that will be trained to effectively maintain and operate the mine.
Reporting to the General Manager - Open Pit, the primary purpose for the Operations Manager - Open Pit is to manage all the operational requirements of the open pit mine. Responsibilities include managing the operations group to conduct all phases of mining from drilling, blasting, loading and hauling.
A key aspect of this role will the in the development of local Mongolian Superintendents and ultimately a local Mongolian manager to replace the incumbent themselves. This leadership position will play an integral part in employee development prior to commissioning for a successful plant start-up, and the years following to ensure 95% nationalisation of the workforce within 5 years. You will be responsible for identifying and assessing employee training and development needs, along with the development of new or enhanced training and development programmes, policies and procedures.
Professional Degree or Diploma in Science, Engineering or related fields is desirable. The successful candidate will have Significant experience at manager level in an Open Pit environment in the mining industry. Experience in major capital projects and a postgraduate degree in Engineering or Business Administration would be an asset.

You will also have demonstrate a strong focus on safety, as well as the ability to develop productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and willingness to work in a developing country with a team from diverse cultural and language backgrounds.
This residentially based position will be based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia with roster to Oyu Tolgoi site (5 days on site and 2 day off in Ulaanbaatar).
