We are executive recruiters. Our client is a well-funded, development stage, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) company that controls substantial helium/carbon dioxide reserves in the St. John’s Field in Eastern Arizona and Western New Mexico. The company has also acquired substantial acreage containing mature, depleted oil fields in the Permian Basin of Eastern New Mexico. They are currently developing the Helium/CO2 project which, when brought online, would make the company one of North America’s largest Helium and CO2 suppliers and EOR producers. They are pursuing a strategy to use CO2 injection methods to produce hydrocarbons from the mature, depleted oilfields that they control.
Our client intends to aggressively pursue the acquisition of additional acreage positions in mature, depleted oilfields in the general area of its current holdings, with the goal of at least doubling its proven reserves of oil considered susceptible to CO2 recovery. In that regard, the company’s senior management has identified the need to bring on board a Petroleum Landman who has experience researching and analyzing mineral ownership reports and records in the Permian Basin of Eastern New Mexico and negotiating or advising on lease terms and provisions related to acquiring those interests.
This position is based in Houston, Texas, although an alternative location of Midland TX would be considered.
This position will report initially to the CEO of the company, and will involve close working relationships with the CFO and several other members of the company’s management team.
Position Responsibilities:
This Petroleum Landman is the company’s point person with regard to the acquisition of oil & gas mineral interests and surface operating rights to enable the company to meet its operating and financial goals.
He/she will:
Ù Perform such research and analysis as may be required to identify and develop prospective acquisitions of oil and gas mineral interests in the company’s primary area of interest (currently the Permian Basin)
Ù Participate in meetings involving company management, consultants, and others with the objective of coming to agreement on general and specific strategies for building the company’s proven reserves; Coordinate the work of brokers, consultants, and contract landmen as required
Ù Review mineral ownership reports, records, maps, abstracts, etc., as required
Ù Obtain run sheets and complete chain of title reports for both surface and mineral ownership with regard to properties of potential interest.
Ù In close cooperation with company management and legal counsel, negotiate lease terms and provisions with mineral interest owners on behalf of the company
Ù Represent the company in the permitting process to secure authorization for such drilling and remedial activities as the company may desire to undertake
Desired Candidate Attributes:
Ù Four year degree in Petroleum Land Management, Petroleum Engineering, business, or a related discipline is strongly preferred
Ù Graduate degree in business or a technical discipline, or a law degree (J.D.), would be an added plus but is not required for this position
Ù A minimum of five (5) years experience in the industry as lease analyst and/or petroleum landman
Ù Familiarity with and recent experience working in the Permian Basin area, particularly Eastern New Mexico
Ù Experience on staff in an operating company will be given more favorable weight as compared to consulting or contract land work
Ù Some experience in a startup or emerging enterprise, or a small business, where in order to succeed, a person must be a self starter who has the demonstrated ability to perform effectively with a minimum of support and infrastructure
Ù Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
Ù Well developed computer skills, including familiarity with PC-based and web-based mapping software, online title search techniques, and other applications that support the role of a landman
Ù Motivation that is centered around goals and results; A person of impeccable reputation and the highest ethical standards
