UNDERGROUND MINE MANAGER

The Underground Mine Manager will report to the VP Operations at the mine site. The incumbent’s main role will be to manage the underground capital development project and future underground mining operation to maximize efficiency, safety and profitability. The individual will review proposed mining methods, equipment purchases, equipment usage, and allocation, and realistically and accurately assess costs of capital and operations. Controlling costs and maximizing profitability, consistent with company values, strategic objectives and good, long-term business practices is critical to the success of this position. The implementation of best management practices and cost control methods is an essential part of the role.

** DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the development of strategic operating plans, policies, budgets, and forecasts in accordance with the company’s strategic objectives.
• Manage all underground operations and work closely with functional heads of Geology, Finance, Human Resources, Purchasing, Warehouse, etc.
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to development and enforcement of environmental and safety programs and the continuing development of training programs.
• Ensure that all duties are performed safely and in compliance with all government regulations as well as company policies.
• Ensure that the underground project’s short and long-term production targets and schedules and mine plans are met, and through effective supervision of subordinates.
• Oversee, plan and coordinate the mining activities to achieve safe, timely, and cost-effective results.
• Supervise and coordinate the activities of direct reports. Support management & supervisor development programs in co-ordination with those planned with the country office functional staff and establish high standards of performance for management.
• Support the organizational culture of the Company while recognizing and advocating the uniqueness of the operation and it’s requirements
• Identify, formulate, and expand the development of effective plans and procedures to ensure maximum operating efficiencies, including cost controls. Formulate annual operating and capital budgets and optimize those expenditures.
• Maintain proactive and open communication with country and corporate senior management teams, providing accurate data on the operation, as well as insightful interpretation of that data.
• Participate in the development of employees, and provide opportunity for career growth through a demonstrated commitment on the part of the company to provide challenges, appropriate opportunities and rewards.
• Keep abreast of state-of-the-art mining methods and equipment and make recommendations for improvements.

** EXPERIENCE

• Currently likely in a senior operations management role wishing to manage a project through to production but wishes to take the next career step to a more senior role in 2 to 3 years.
• Ten years of progressive experience in mining operations is necessary with 4 years experience in underground mining at senior level. International experience is desirable.
• Has considerable experience with underground mining

** SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Must be willing to relocate and actively enjoys international assignments
• Superior operational management skills, combined with an ability to develop and execute plans by applying leadership skills not just management techniques.
• Maintains close supervision of all underground mining operations, being present at the mine a minimum of 4 days per week and on many occasions 5 days. “Leads from the front”
• Must be adept at motivating and obtaining results, leading by example with a participatory management style. Firm but fair results orientation
• Ability to exercise sound business judgment
• Strong team orientation. Works co-operatively with peers in other operations and in corporate office
• Must possess a solid work ethic, high energy level, and strong desire to do things safely and efficiently.
• Must exhibit exemplary integrity. The individual must place value on sharing information and common goals, maintaining an environment of honesty, openness, and energetic exchange.
• An outstanding communicator who speaks, writes, and listens well.
• A strong decision-maker who does gets into details when required but does not become mired in them. Seeks broad input when making decisions.
• Must be willing to aggressively attack problems and assume ownership of issues and solutions facing the project/operation.
• Self-directed and self-motivated, demonstrating initiative to do more than is expected or required in the position with the desire and capability to progress within the organization.


** EDUCATION AND ATTRIBUTES

• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or Engineering or related tertiary education is a definite requirement.
• Senior Management Program or MBA would be advantageous.
• Prior experience in a FSU country, or developing countries, would be advantageous.
• Russian language will be an asset.
• Medically fit to work at +4000 meters and arctic conditions.

** BENEFITS
• This is a resident position, located in the capital city of the Kyrgyz Republic though the incumbent will work and live at the mine site during the work week.
