Laboratory Process Technician

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is an industry leader in the supply of iron ore to the global steel industry. We are expanding our operations through a series of Rapid Growth Projects to help us meet demand. We are increasing our mine, rail and port capacity and developing new, high value-in-use products to provide steel makers with competitive advantages. Our newest growth project, Rapid Growth Project 5, will take installed capacity at our Iron Ore operations to 205mpta by the second half of calendar year 2011. Position Synopsis

We are seeking highly motivated individuals to be a part of the laboratory shift team. They are to contribute to the safe operation, achievement of operational, quality and reliability targets.

Based in Newman and reporting to the Laboratory Shift Supervisor, key responsibilities include:

* Contributing to the HSE performance for the laboratory;
* Use systems, procedures and work instructions for safe operation in the laboratory;
* Being part of a team where self motivation and open communication is valued;
* Contributing to the shift team in achievement of operational, quality and reliability targets; and
* Being a team member in continuous improvement initiatives.

Skills & Experience

This role will ideally suit an individual with experience in laboratories preferably in the mining or manufacturing industries and the ability to work within a team environment to achieve success. Essential skills include:

* A working knowledge of HSE systems and their implications for day-to-day operational activities;
* A strong focus on operating discipline;
* Good communication and interpersonal skills;
* Good problem solving and analytical skills; and
* Experience with computerised information systems.

Experience with laboratory robotic systems, laboratory practice and/or XRF analysis will be viewed favourably but not essential.

Local conditions apply: this role is only open to people who can supply their own housing in Newman in accordance with BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Housing policy.
