The key role of the Chief Geologist (CG) is to manage on-site mine geology, resource development and grade control technical staff, and to support the Mine Manager (MM) in developing the mine to the most viable and economical mine plan.
Other functions of the role include that his / her technical staff are preparing the necessary technical and planning information, and to advise operations staff of its interpretation to the operating plan.
The CG is a member of the Mining Department, reporting directly to the Mine Manager, and supported by key technical staff as direct subordinates.
In order for the incumbent carry out the role effectively, it will be necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with:
• mine engineering; to communicate and assist in achieving their technical objectives;
• survey section; to communicate and assist in achieving their technical objectives,
• laboratory section; to communicate and assign priorities to samples and liaise on QA/QC;
• mine operations section; to advise, communicate and assist in achieving their budgetary and technical objectives,
• exploration section - to communicate and coordinate on near mine exploration programmes and the development of geological models
• contractors; to communicate and ensure technical objectives are achieved through third parties (where required);
At times, the aforementioned objectives of each party may be in conflict. If these conflicts cannot be resolved, these matters must be identified and brought to the attention of the Mining Manager for resolution.
The CG is to maintain high standards of quality control, technical advice and training for all Mine personnel. The CG must champion and display respect, trustworthiness and a commitment to safety and safe work practices.
The CG will act in a supervisory capacity and assign duties and note performance of persons under their charge. The CG will be responsible for the conduct and manner in which work is undertaken. The CG will be required to counsel and discipline persons in their charge in accordance with the Company Policies and Procedures manual.
The CG will ensure Company property is correctly operated and maintained.
The CG will be cost conscious and review new and existing systems for improvements.
>> ACCOUNTABILITIES
The CG is accountable for providing technical support and communicating with operations staff and the Contractor. To achieve these objectives the SG must manage and execute certain principal tasks;
• Regularly familiarise and inspect working areas on a regular basis;
• Determine operational improvements, safety deficiencies and improvements in and around the work areas; and rectify safety deficiencies;
• Pursue operational and technical improvements;
• Ensure grade control activities are planned and resourced to ensure efficient mining operations;
• Co-ordinate and maintain accurate records and planned of mined ore;
• Co-ordinate and maintain accurate mapping of the geological structures and features;
• Attend management, communication and co-ordination meetings, as required;
• Regularly discuss safety aspects of assigned duties;
• Report to the Mine Manager on a regular basis;
• Provide monthly reconciliations of mined versus reserves/resource;
• Provide monthly report documenting activities for each month;
• Initiate project work to improve the understanding of the ore body;
• Prepare budgets and forecasts as required;
• Review and assess subordinates on performance;
• Ensure ore mining records are updated daily (and are current);
• Review operational practices, such as ore recovery and dilution;
• Assign work priorities in consideration of operational requirements;
• Direct the development of three-dimensional geology models
• Design and manage the correct and focussed implementation of infill drilling programmes to develop and expand resources and reserves
• Manage mine area geological, geochemical and geophysical exploration programmes
• Develop and drill test new, near mine targets for resource expansion
• Generate and manage project budgets on annual basis
• Compile internal monthly and technical reports
>> QUALIFICATION PROFILE
1) LEVEL OF EDUCATION - Degree in Geology
2) LANGUAGE/ COMMUNICATION/ REPORT WRITING SKILLS - English mandatory and French preferable
3) EXPERIENCE REQUIRED - 10 to 15 years overall experience
4) APTITUDES/ INTERESTS/ SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - General understanding of all of mine geology, mining and milling equipment and practices; and
Detailed knowledge of the laboratory sampling process.
