Position Summary:
Operates various types of equipment during the course of construction or maintenance projects.
Essential Job Functions:
Note: Equipment types will divide heavy equipment operators into two (2) classes.
Earthmoving/Material Transportation:
1. Journeyman operation of equipment consisting of: Heavy Duty Trucks (Winch Truck, Bed Truck, Side Dump, Belly Dump, Tankers, Vacuum Truck, Super Suckers); compaction equipment; backhoe; excavators; graders; dozers; front end loaders; and scrapers.
Cranes:
1. Journeyman operation of equipment consisting of: cherry pickers; pedestal cranes; truck cranes; crawler cranes; tower cranes; derricks; and side Booms.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Expertise:
1. Five (5) years experience in operating heavy construction equipment under multi- weather conditions is preferred.
2. A heavy equipment operator will be qualified for at least one of the above listed classes and types of equipment but may be qualified for more.
3. Possess an excellent knowledge of the functional operation, purpose, capabilities and limitations of any piece of equipment they are qualified to operate.
4. Display a thorough knowledge of the proper manner in which to operate and maintain a specific piece of equipment.
5. Ability to read, interpret or use capacity charts, rigging diagrams, common hand signals, grade stakes or other applicable drawings.
6. Demonstrate the safe accessories within the range of each piece of equipment operated.
7. Read and understand the results and what each gauge signifies on each piece of equipment being operated.
8. Pre-check and inspect all equipment before operation, which includes checking the oil, fuel, general and visual inspection of the entire chassis (depending on the type of each equipment being operated) windshield, all mirrors, blade, tracks, wheel rims, thumping each tire and lug nuts, oil levels within wheel wells, and checking (while in operation) all moving parts such as handles, levers, and steering wheels.
9. Check equipment operation log to see when vehicle was last maintained, such as oil change and lube jobs and make pre-operation notations in it pertaining to operating the designated piece of equipment that day.
10. Notify foremen of recognized faulty equipment and red-tag it so that it will be unsafe to operate, until it is repaired and declared safe to operate by the mechanic and inspected by the foremen.
Education:
1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED) with equipment operation experience or associate’s degree or certificate from an equipment operating school with experience is desired.
Required Training & Certificates:
1. Attend training sessions and gang-box equipment/safety meetings required by organization.
2. Must possess current Class A CDL with TX endorsements.
3. Possess current knowledge of safe equipment operations and maintenance of equipment.
4. Have adequate written and oral communications applicable to standards set by organization.
5. Knowledge of computerized components in various kinds of machinery and (former experience) being able to operate them is a plus, in being considered for employment by organization.

Mobility:
1. Access all controls and all parts of machine for service.
Hearing:
1. Hear audible safety alarms.
Visual Acuity:
1. Must be adequate to perform all listed tasks in a safe manner and take hand signals from groundman or flagman.
Lifting:
1. Must be able to routinely lift up to seventy (70) pounds.
Communication Skills:
1. Ability to read and understand job descriptions, safety manuals and safety and warning signs, which includes completing employee hiring documents and forms.
2. Sufficient oral communication skills to be able to give and receive oral safety warnings and instructions and task assignments.
Environment:
1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is or could be exposed to extreme multi-weather working conditions.
Small Tools:
1. Own and be equipped with the tools on the attached list, if required.
