Principal Advisor – Defect Elimination

We are expanding every facet of our Iron Ore business as we develop new ways to deliver competitive advantages to our customers. Our most recent growth project, Rapid Growth Project 5, will take installed capacity at our Western Australian Iron Ore operations to 205mpta by the second half of calendar year 2011.

Position Synopsis

Critical to the success of BHP Billiton Iron Ore is our ability to continuously improve on our systems and processes. You will engage with maintenance professionals and leaders across and external to our Western Australian Iron Ore operations to facilitate change to maintenance practices and directly influence defect elimination.

Your leadership of failure investigations, development of a system to capture failures, analysis of major failures and resultant actions will contribute to the identification of opportunities to improve maintenance practices, processes and critical equipment reliability.

Key responsibilities include:

* Development, implement and maintain defect elimination systems, processes and procedure;
* Lead major failure investigations;
* Develop, implement and maintain a system for capturing failure investigation information;
* Develop, implement and maintain a system to effectively manage actions identified in the investigations;
* Provide site support with the implementation of actions from major failure investigations;
* Ensure that improvements and learning’s identified in investigations are shared and implemented across WAIO; and
* Work with Sustaining Capital and ADP to update specifications to capture the learnings from investigations.

Skills and Experience

You must have extensive experience in maintenance and defect elimination/root cause failure analysis, ideally complemented by tertiary qualifications in engineering. A skilled facilitator, you will be familiar with 6 Sigma and Lean principles and proficient leading major failure investigations using reliability tools including FMECA, RCA and Condition Monitoring.

Equally as important are your first class project management skills evidenced by your ability to translate change into simple terms and successfully engage and influence key stakeholders including senior leaders.
