BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is the world’s largest seaborne coking coal supplier. BMA operates nine mine sites and a coal loading port in Central Queensland. Poitrel Mine is located 35km south-east of Moranbah in Central Queensland. Poitrel mine is owned by BHP Mitsui Coal (BMC) and operated by BMA. Poitrel is a contract mining operation feeding a shared Coal Handling Preparation Plant (Red Mountain Infrastructure) with an adjacent mine owner. The position will be located at Poitrel with residence in Moranbah, a modern, well-serviced town of around 7,000 a few hours form Mackay and the Whitsunday Coast.
The role of Environmental Superintendent is to establish and maintain effective environmental systems, standards and procedures which ensure that the mine’s business plan is achieved (or exceeded) thereby maximising the value of the mine to stakeholders. Reporting into the General Manager of Poitrel Mine
Core Accountabilities:
The core accountabilities include, but are not limited to, the following and can be revised by the Company to suit the needs of the business:
Ensure compliance with role/responsibility requirements for Safety & Health Management Plan and Environmental Management System, Guide to Business Conduct, Work Responsibly Policy, etc.
Ensure safety risks are reduced by actively auditing exposure, conduction of SAO’s, participating in safety meetings and projects, reviewing incidents and implementing change.
By means of attitude and actions, demonstrate a consistent, visible, and proactive leadership and commitment towards:-
Ensuring the compliance of all personnel in respect to Company policies and procedures (HSEC, Safety and Health Manual etc.)
Demonstrate commitment to and hold others accountable for complying with the mine’s values by actively encouraging the involvement and motivation of personnel to promote the BMA Charter
Ensure compliance with the mine’s Safety and Health Management System and Coal Mining Safety and Health Act and Regulations, Develop and implement systems which ensure:
Compliance with statutory and lease commitments;
The development of effective relationships with external organizations, (e.g. community, government, employee, neighbouring landholders);
Compliance with company policies and procedures;
Effective management of environmental contractors;
Timely and accurate monitoring of water quality and rehabilitation projects through data collection and recording;
Timely and effective communication to interested parties.
Develop accurate budgets for business plan.
Specific Responsibilities:
To ensure that the range of appropriate resources are available for the implementation and control of the EMS.
To develop budgets which include provision for environmental aspects.
To set and achieve environmental objectives and targets in accordance with the EMS.
To make department staff available to attend specialised environmental training, as required by the HSEC Policy, legislation or EMS.
To maintain operational controls and standards as described in applicable work procedures and environmental management plans.
To maintain awareness of specific areas of responsibility as described in the EMS.
To support and participate in Management Review of the EMS.
A duty to report any activity that they suspect may be causing, or have the potential to cause, unauthorised environmental harm.
To ensure positive relationships are developed and maintained with key external stakeholders
To be up to date on all relevant environmental legislation and ensure that any changes to legislation are implemented
Ensure that continuous improvement in environmental management is maintained
Ensure all reporting to government agencies and corporate is accurate and is submitted in a timely manner
Ensure the professional development of direct reports
Ensure site management are given regular feedback on the site’s environmental performance/initiatives
Ensure all employees are informed of the site’s environmental performance and initiatives and promote environmental management as being everyone’s responsibility
Responsible for attending specialised environmental training as required.
Maintain ISO14000 accreditation
Ensure all reports are completed accurately and timely
Conduct work activities as per sectional work plan within budget
To be successful in this role you will have;
Appropriate tertiary qualifications
5 years post graduate experience in mining or heavy industry
Experience in open cut mining
