A fast growing international mid tier copper producer is looking for an Environmental Manager for a world class tailings reclamation project in French Africa.
The successful applicant will be responsible for all areas of environmental management for this project including permitting and overseeing the development, implementation and enforcing of IFC and World Bank standards. Mentoring national workforce will be a key component of your responsibilities and you will be expected to work with little supervision.
Reporting to the General Manager Responsibilities will include:
Oversee implementation of the environmental and social action plans developed by these teams.
Set up environmental policy for the project by studying government legislature and coordinating with government officials.
Coordinate environmental policy between site management and the company head office as well as report to the board on compliance and programs.
Research, understand and manage the long-term environmental resource availability with respect to sustainability, efficient necessary usage and protection of sensitive components (e.g. wetlands; ground and surface water resources and local biodiversity).

Assesses the overall situation around the planned and existing infrastructural developments, in order to design the necessary strategies to minimize and manage the effects
Develop the Social/Community Development Plan in accordance with company corporate policies and the legislative requirements within the country of operation
Communicate with all interested and affected parties on any matter relating to the overall project development, which will impact on their life and times, whether in a positive, negative or neutral way.
Engage community leaders to obtain their support and compliance for all initiatives relating to the social environment, including the promotion of employment opportunities; training and development; small business initiatives and provision of utilities, which can reinforce operational actions
Liaise with government and all other stakeholders on E&C issues, including the implementation of the various development plans and initiatives (e.g. Community Development Plan; Environmental and Social Management Plan).
Requirements:
Degree in environmental science/management or equivalent
7 years experience in the mining industry with 3 years in the role of environmental manager
Knowledge of and the ability to implement IFC Standards, World Bank Environmental Health & Safety Guidelines and ISO 14001
Good verbal and written communication skills in English with French skills considered an asset ; Must be an effective communicator with senior management representatives as well as the public.
An ability to motivate people to attain the required goals to support operations.
Solid leadership skills required with the ability to present a positive, professional image.
Ability to make good decisions and enforce company policies in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures.
Experienced working with indigenous communities.
FIFO preferred but residential status will be considered. Residential position best suited for a seasoned expat couple with no children. Successful candidate will be rewarded with a competitive expatriate package with long term and short term incentive plans.
